Mules are genuinely curious animals. They investigate new objects, new animals, and new situations with deliberate attention rather than the reactive startle response of a horse. This curiosity is part of how they evaluate safety, and it can be used constructively in management - a mule that is allowed to investigate a new piece of equipment or a new area at its own pace will usually accept it calmly. Social bonding in mules is strong. They form clear preferences for specific companions and can become genuinely distressed when separated from them. In a working team of mules, each animal will have preferences about its working partner and may perform noticeably better or worse depending on the pairing. This is largely a positive characteristic, but it means that decisions about mule ownership should factor in a genuinely long-term relationship.
Ignoring the importance of early handling is a mistake with lasting consequences. Mules that were handled extensively, carefully, and positively as foals or young animals are dramatically easier to work with as adults than mules that were minimally handled or handled poorly in their early years. If you are buying a young mule, paying a significant premium for one that has been properly started is almost always worth it compared to buying an unhandled or poorly handled animal at a lower price and spending years rebuilding the relationship from a deficit position.
Expecting cookie-cutter performance across individual mules is a mistake that frustrates people who come from working with horse breeds selected over generations for consistent type and temperament. Individual mule variation is real and significant. The mule your neighbor raves about may be nothing like the one you end up with, even if they came from the same type of jack and mare.
