Pigs with strong immune systems tend to resist heavy mange infestations better than those that are stressed, poorly nourished, or otherwise compromised. Heritage breeds raised in conditions that match their natural requirements often maintain robust immune function. Commercial breeds pushed for maximum growth in confinement conditions sometimes show greater susceptibility. This does not mean certain breeds are immune to mange, just that overall health and management play significant roles in how severely any individual pig is affected.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The most frequent mistake people make with mange is waiting too long to act. When you first notice a pig scratching more than usual or see a small rough patch developing, the temptation is to watch and wait. Maybe it will clear up on its own. Maybe it is just dry skin or a minor irritation. By the time you accept that you have a mange problem, the infestation has spread further through your herd and become more entrenched in every affected animal. Treating early is easier, cheaper, and more effective than tackling an advanced outbreak.
