Llamas were domesticated in South America thousands of years ago from the guanaco, a wild camelid of the Andean highlands. They were used historically as pack animals, fiber sources, and occasionally as meat animals, and the breeds that developed reflected those uses. When llamas were imported to North America in significant numbers beginning in the 1970s and 1980s, the emphasis shifted toward show animals, fiber production, and to a lesser extent trekking and packing. Guardian llamas and working pack llamas represent a smaller but devoted portion of the community.
For a small farm owner trying to decide which llamas to start with, the most important things to understand are the practical differences between classic and suri types, the role that individual temperament and handling history plays in selecting functional animals, and the specific considerations that apply if you have a primary use in mind - fiber, packing, guardian work, or simply a general-purpose farm animal. The breed label tells you something useful. The individual animal in front of you tells you much more.

Section 2 Essential Requirements
Classic llamas are the more common type in North America and the one most people picture when they think of a llama. They carry a dense, double-coated fiber with a straight to slightly wavy texture, a body that is broader and more substantial than a suri, and a banana-shaped ear that is one of the defining visual traits of the species. Classic fiber grows perpendicular to the body and stands out from the skin, giving the animal its characteristic fluffy appearance. The fiber is warm, light, and lanolin-free - an advantage for processing - but coarser than suri and generally less valuable per pound in the specialty fiber market.
Suri llamas carry a dramatically different fiber - long, silky, and lustrous, parting down the spine and hanging in pencil locks that can reach the ground on an animal that has not been shorn in several years. Suri fiber commands a premium in specialty markets and produces a finished product with a distinctive drape and sheen. The tradeoff is that suri fiber is not water-resistant in the way that classic fiber is. A suri llama caught in prolonged rain without adequate shelter access can become dangerously chilled in conditions that would leave a classic llama perfectly comfortable. If your climate is wet, suri animals require more attentive shelter management.
Beyond the two primary types, you will encounter llamas described as medium-fiber, luster-fiber, or intermediate - these are animals whose fiber falls between the classic and suri standards, either by breeding or by natural variation. They are perfectly functional farm animals even if they do not fit neatly into a show ring category.
Size range in llamas is broader than most people expect. Adult females typically weigh between 250 and 350 pounds. Adult males are larger, ranging from 300 to 450 pounds or more for heavily built individuals. Height at the withers ranges from about four feet for smaller animals to five and a half feet for the largest. For pack work, larger bone structure and a well-sprung rib cage are advantageous because they indicate greater carrying capacity. For guardian use or general farm presence, size matters less than temperament and bond. For fiber production, bone structure matters primarily in that a heavily muscled, well-conditioned animal tends to produce better fiber quality than one that is thin and stressed.
Teeth are often overlooked when evaluating potential purchases and should not be. Llamas have fighting teeth - sharp, curved canine teeth - that emerge in mature males, both intact and gelded. These need periodic grinding or removal by a veterinarian or dentist because they can injure other animals and occasionally the handlers. Inspect the bite of any animal you are considering buying. Malocclusion - an overbite or underbite - is heritable, is increasingly common in heavily line-bred show animals, and affects the animal's ability to graze and process feed efficiently. A llama with a significant overbite will need more supplemental hay than a properly aligned one to maintain the same body condition, and dental issues may worsen with age.
Section 3 Daily Care And Management
Daily management requirements do not differ significantly between classic and suri types, but the fiber management calendar does. Both types require annual shearing, but suri animals whose fiber is not harvested for market need particularly careful attention to timing - suri locks can mat if allowed to grow too long, and a heavily matted llama requires significant time and labor to address. Classic animals are more forgiving of a slightly delayed shear because their fiber does not mat in the same way.
All llamas need toenails trimmed two to four times per year. Animals kept on soft ground will need more frequent trimming than those on rocky or harder footing. The nails are trimmed with hoof trimmers or heavy scissors and should be kept level with the pad and free of curling. This is a skill that takes a few tries to get comfortable with, and having an experienced person demonstrate it the first time is worth more than any written description.
Feeding across both types is similar. Quality grass hay as the primary forage, access to a llama-appropriate loose mineral, and fresh water at all times. Neither type requires grain as a standard part of the diet unless an individual is in poor condition, heavily pregnant, or nursing a cria and needs additional energy. Grain-fed llamas that do not need the extra calories become overweight, and overweight llamas are prone to heat stress, joint problems, and metabolic issues. If you are buying an animal from a show background, it may have been on a more intensive feeding program than a working farm animal needs, and transitioning it to a simpler diet is appropriate.
Section 4 Health Considerations
Health requirements across llama types are essentially the same. All llamas need the CDT vaccination series and annual boosters. All benefit from an annual veterinary check. All require monitoring for internal parasites, periodic toenail care, and annual shearing. The management differences that do exist come more from regional considerations than from type differences.
Llamas imported from South American genetics have some historical resistance to the altitude-related health challenges of their ancestral environment, but in North American climates the health challenges are primarily parasitic, nutritional, and weather-related rather than altitude-related. What this means practically is that your regional extension office or a vet experienced with camelids is your most reliable source for vaccination recommendations, parasite management protocols, and mineral supplementation guidance, because those recommendations vary substantially by geography.
One health consideration that applies specifically to suri animals in very cold climates is the fiber's reduced insulating capacity compared to classic fiber. Suri locks do not trap air the way a dense classic fleece does, and a suri llama in a cold, wet environment may need supplemental body coverage - a llama blanket - during extreme weather that would not concern you for a classic animal of the same body condition. Know your climate and factor it into your management plan for suri animals specifically.
Camelid-experienced veterinary care is worth seeking out deliberately. Llama medicine differs from horse, goat, and cow medicine in several significant ways - particularly regarding drug dosing - and a vet who applies their large-animal experience to a llama without camelid-specific knowledge can inadvertently cause serious harm. Ask potential vets directly whether they have treated llamas and alpacas before. Section 5 Breed Considerations
For someone buying their first llamas, the most useful framework is not breed but purpose. Define what you want your llamas to do - fiber, packing, guardian work, or simply pleasant farm animals - and let that guide the type and individual characteristics you prioritize.
For fiber production, suri animals produce the highest-value product per pound if you have a market for it. Classic animals produce more accessible fiber that is easier to process at home or through small-scale mills and has broader appeal in direct-to-consumer fiber markets. If you are not sure whether you will pursue fiber processing seriously, starting with classic animals is the lower-risk choice.
For packing and trekking, size and structural soundness matter more than fiber type. Look for animals with well-set legs, good feet, and a calm, confident temperament that holds up under novel circumstances - different terrain, unfamiliar sounds, encounters with wildlife. Llamas trained for packing can carry loads of 50 to 80 pounds comfortably over reasonable terrain, making them genuinely useful for backcountry trips.
For guardian use, as covered in the guardian article, a single gelded male of either type works well. Classic animals are slightly preferable simply because their fiber stands up better to wet outdoor conditions across seasons. The fiber type matters far less than the individual's temperament and bonding history.
For a general farm animal that will serve as a companion, occasional fiber source, and pleasant presence in the pasture, start wherever you find animals at a fair price with good temperaments and documented handling history. Type can always be refined in future purchases once you know what you enjoy working with.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
Buying based on price alone is the most consistent source of problems for first-time llama owners. The cheapest llamas on the market are almost always cheap for a reason - they are difficult to handle, have known health problems, are aged beyond their productive years, or come from situations where their handling history is unknown or poor. A difficult llama that is free is infinitely more expensive than an easy llama that costs a thousand dollars, once you factor in the time, frustration, vet calls, and potential animal welfare problems that come with an unmanageable animal. Start with a budget that allows you to buy a healthy, well-handled animal from a reputable source, and treat it as the right investment for getting off to a good start.
Buying a single llama is a mistake that causes welfare problems from day one. Llamas are herd animals. A single llama kept alone will be chronically stressed, and chronic stress compromises immune function, increases parasite susceptibility, and produces behavioral problems from frustrated social needs. Buy at least two, or have a companion animal already in place before the first llama arrives. The companion does not need to be another llama - a goat or sheep can serve the purpose - but something needs to be there.
Overlooking dental evaluation when purchasing animals is a mistake that frequently comes back around within the first year. A llama with significant malocclusion or damaged teeth will lose body condition despite what looks like adequate feed access, because it cannot process forage efficiently. Getting teeth checked before purchase costs nothing if the seller has nothing to hide and saves significant expense and animal welfare problems if the seller does.
Not understanding the ongoing costs before you commit is a planning failure that hurts animals when owners realize they cannot afford proper care. Annual shearing by a professional costs money. Veterinary care costs money. Quality hay costs money, particularly in drought years when prices spike. Toenail trimming, either your own time or a farm call, costs money. These are not unexpected costs - they are the standard maintenance costs of the animal - but people who buy llamas on impulse without having thought them through discover them as unpleasant surprises. Know the annual cost of ownership for your region before you commit to the animals.
Finally, buying intact males - entire males, not geldings - without a specific breeding program in mind is a mistake that produces problems in short order. Intact male llamas are more aggressive toward each other and toward humans than geldings, require separate housing from females unless breeding is intended, and have fighting teeth that need more aggressive management. A gelding costs roughly the same as an intact male to maintain and is dramatically easier to work with for every purpose other than breeding. Unless you have a specific, planned breeding program, buy geldings.
One last mistake worth flagging for first-time buyers is not visiting the animals before purchase. Photos are easy to take in flattering light with a cooperative animal. A video call or in-person visit where you watch the llama move freely, observe its posture and body condition from multiple angles, and see it being caught and handled tells you things no photograph can. Make the trip if at all possible, or arrange a video call that includes the handling demonstration. You will be living with this decision for fifteen or more years.
