The stakes during delivery are high because lambs can survive only a short time with their umbilical cord pinched by the birth canal. Once active labor begins, you have perhaps thirty to forty-five minutes before a lamb in normal position suffocates, and less time if the cord is compressed in a malpresentation. This timeline does not mean you should intervene immediately when a ewe starts pushing, but it does mean you cannot walk away and check back in an hour hoping for the best. You can usually correct this by pushing the lamb back slightly while reaching in to straighten the bent leg, bringing the foot forward into normal position. Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

Stop pulling, reach in to identify the obstruction, and correct the position before resuming traction. A shepherd who muscles through a stuck delivery often ends up with a dead lamb, a damaged ewe, and the realization that repositioning would have taken less effort and produced a better outcome.

Neglecting the lamb after delivery in favor of continuing to assist the ewe risks losing a viable newborn to cold or respiratory problems. The first lamb out needs its airway cleared, its navel dipped, and stimulation to encourage breathing and activity. If you must continue working with the ewe to deliver a twin, at least clear the first lamb's nose and mouth, rub it vigorously with a towel, and position it where the ewe can see and smell it. Failing to ensure colostrum intake because the lamb appeared to nurse kills lambs that seemed healthy at birth. Watching a lamb make nursing attempts does not confirm actual milk consumption. Check that the lamb's belly feels full after nursing, that the ewe's teats show evidence of being suckled, and that the lamb settles into satisfied sleep rather than continuing to search and vocalize. Lambs that fail to get colostrum decline gradually over the first day or two, becoming weak and hypothermic before dying of infection or starvation. This entirely preventable loss requires only verification that nursing actually succeeded.
