If you keep horses, cattle, goats, sheep, or almost any other livestock, hay is probably the single largest input cost on your farm. Growing even a portion of it yourself changes the math considerably - and more than that, it changes how you feel about winter. There is something genuinely satisfying about looking at a barn stacked to the rafters with hay you grew, knowing your animals are covered through February no matter what the weather does.
Hay production is not complicated, but it does demand attention to timing and weather in a way that most other farm tasks do not. You can plant a garden a week late and still eat well. You can be a week late cutting hay and end up with something your horses will pick through and waste. The window between "perfect" and "too mature" is real, and learning to read it is most of what hay production is about.
For the small farm operator, the goal is usually not to become a commercial hay producer. The goal is to reduce purchased feed costs, know exactly what is in the hay your animals are eating, and have the security of a homegrown supply. A 10-acre hay field managed well can produce enough to carry a small herd through the winter, and the work involved - while real - is concentrated into a few intense cutting periods rather than spread across the whole year.

Section 2 Essential Requirements
Good hay starts with good ground. Before you plant or fertilize anything, get a soil test. Your county extension office can tell you exactly what your field is missing, and a basic soil test costs less than a single round bale of quality hay. Low pH is the most common problem on fields that underperform - most hay crops want a pH between 6.0 and 6.8, and if your soil is sitting at 5.5, you can fertilize all you want and still get a thin, weedy stand. Lime is cheap. Skipping the soil test is expensive.
The equipment question is usually the first thing people get hung up on, and it can feel overwhelming. At minimum, cutting hay requires a mower - either a sickle bar or a disc mower. A disc mower handles heavier stands and rough conditions better and is the practical choice for most small farm setups. After cutting, the hay needs to be tedded or raked to speed drying, and then baled. For small acreage, a small square baler is often the most practical choice. Square bales are easier to handle by hand, stack more efficiently in older barn spaces, and sell readily if you end up with more than you need. Round balers require more storage planning and handling equipment, but they are faster on larger acreage.
If you do not own equipment, look at your neighbors and your local custom operators before you buy anything. Custom baling - where you pay someone per bale or per acre to come in and do the cutting and baling - is a legitimate option that many small farms use permanently. You maintain the field, they bring the machinery, and you split the hay or settle in cash. The cost per bale is higher than doing it yourself, but the capital outlay is zero and the labor demand on cutting day is a fraction of what it would be otherwise.
Your choice of hay species matters more than most beginners expect. Timothy and orchardgrass are reliable, palatable, and well-suited to most of the northern United States. They make excellent horse hay. Bermudagrass and bahiagrass dominate in the South and tolerate heat and drought in ways that northern species cannot. Alfalfa is the highest-protein option and is beloved by dairy cows, goats, and horses in work - but it requires well-drained, fertile soil and careful management to avoid bloat issues in ruminants. A grass-legume mix, such as orchardgrass with a modest amount of red clover, is often the most forgiving option for beginning hay producers because the legume fixes its own nitrogen and the grass provides structure and yield stability.
Water is rarely thought about as a hay production input, but in dry years, irrigated fields produce two to three times the tonnage of dryland fields. If you have irrigation access and are serious about hay self-sufficiency, it is worth the investment. If you do not, match your stocking rate to what your dryland fields can realistically produce in an average year - not a good year.
Section 3 Daily Care And Management
Hay production management is seasonal rather than daily, but the seasonal tasks are non-negotiable if you want a good outcome. In early spring, walk your fields and note any winter damage, bare patches, or weed pressure that needs addressing before the stand gets going. Thin spots invite weeds, and weeds reduce both yield and quality. Overseeding bare areas in early spring, when frost action still works seeds into the soil, is far easier than fighting thistles and burdock all summer.
Fertilizing after each cutting is what most small farm operators skip, and it shows in declining yields over time. Hay removes significant amounts of potassium and phosphorus from the soil every cutting season. Nitrogen is less critical if you have legumes in your stand, but pure grass fields need it to perform. Pull the trigger on a fertilizer pass after the first cutting and your second cutting will reward you. Skip it for three or four years and your yield will drop by half.
The actual cutting decision is where experience matters most. For most cool-season grasses, the ideal cutting window is boot stage to early head - when the seed heads are just beginning to emerge but have not fully opened. At this point, the plant still has most of its energy and protein concentrated in the leaves. Wait until the field is in full head and the quality drops noticeably. For alfalfa, cut at one-tenth bloom - when about ten percent of the plants show their first purple flowers. This gives you the best balance of yield and protein.
After cutting, the hay needs two to four days of drying time depending on humidity, temperature, and how thick the swath is. Tedding - fluffing and spreading the cut hay - speeds drying dramatically and is worth the extra pass if rain is possible. Never bale hay that is not fully dry. Wet hay generates heat as it ferments in the bale, and hot hay can spontaneously combust in the barn. Check bales by plunging your arm into the center of a few before they go in storage. If they feel warm or damp, give them another day.
Section 4 Health Considerations
Hay quality directly affects the health of the animals eating it, and poor hay causes a surprising number of livestock health problems that owners attribute to other causes. Dusty hay with visible mold, discoloration, or a musty smell is not just unpalatable - it can cause respiratory disease in horses, particularly heaves, a chronic condition that is very difficult to reverse once established. Moldy hay fed to cattle and goats can cause listeriosis, a neurological disease with a high fatality rate. If hay smells off, do not feed it. The cost of a round bale is not worth a vet call or a dead animal.
Nitrate toxicity is a real concern in certain conditions. Cereal rye, sudangrass, and some other species can accumulate dangerous nitrate levels during drought stress or following a hard frost on immature growth. Animals that die from nitrate toxicity do so quickly and without much warning. If you are baling any of these species under stress conditions, get the hay tested before feeding it. Your state extension laboratory can run a nitrate test quickly and inexpensively.
Blister beetles are a livestock killer that hides in alfalfa hay. These insects are toxic to horses in particular - even a small number of beetles in a flake of hay can be lethal. Blister beetles tend to cluster, so infestations are inconsistent and unpredictable. They are most common in alfalfa grown in the southern plains states. Crimped alfalfa, where the hay was conditioned during cutting, is higher risk because the conditioning process kills the beetles but leaves their toxic compound intact. If you are feeding alfalfa to horses and do not know where it was grown, ask.
From a health standpoint, the best thing you can do is produce and source hay you understand. Knowing your field, your species, your fertilizer program, and your cutting and storage practices means you know what is going in the bale - and that knowledge protects your animals far better than any reactive health measure after the fact.
Section 5 Breed Considerations
The species you grow is not a breed decision the way it is with livestock, but matching your hay species to your animals and your climate is just as important as any breed selection you will make on the livestock side. Horses and ponies do best on good grass hay - timothy, orchardgrass, or bromegrass - with alfalfa used as a supplement for hard keepers or performance animals rather than as the primary forage. Too much alfalfa in an easy keeper's diet contributes to metabolic problems and is simply more protein than most idle horses need.
Goats and sheep utilize legume hays extremely well and can thrive on straight alfalfa or clover mixes that would be excessive for horses. Dairy goats in particular benefit from the higher protein of legume hay to support milk production. Meat goats and sheep on maintenance rations do fine on good grass hay without the expense of alfalfa.
Cattle are the most flexible consumers of hay quality. They can utilize lower-quality, more mature grass hay that horses would waste, making them a good fit for fields that do not always get cut at the ideal time. However, lactating cows and growing calves need better nutrition than dry cows on winter maintenance, so sorting your hay by quality and feeding accordingly is worth the effort if you run a mixed-age herd.
For small farms with multiple species, a grass-clover mix is often the best hedge because it produces hay that works acceptably across most livestock without the extreme protein levels of straight alfalfa or the low nutrition of pure mature grass.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
The biggest mistake beginning hay producers make is baling hay that is not dry enough. It feels like a judgment call, and when rain is threatening, there is enormous pressure to bale early and get it under cover. Resist that pressure. Wet hay in a barn is not just wasted hay - it is a fire waiting to happen. Hay that reaches internal temperatures above 170 degrees Fahrenheit can ignite without any outside spark. Every year, farms burn because someone baled into questionable conditions and rolled the dice. Use a hay moisture probe if you can get one. Squeeze-test bales before they go in. When in doubt, wait.
The second mistake is skipping soil maintenance. People plant a field, get good results for two or three years, and then wonder why production drops off. Hay removes nutrients from the soil relentlessly. A two-cutting season on a good stand can pull 200 pounds of potassium per acre out of the ground. If you are not putting it back, the field is drawing down its account. Test your soil every two to three years, fertilize after cuttings, and lime when the pH slips. Fields that are maintained properly will outperform neglected fields by double or more over a decade.
Underestimating hay needs is a mistake that catches people every fall. It is easy to look at a full barn in October and feel confident. Then February arrives, hay consumption goes up because it is cold and animals are burning more calories, and suddenly the barn is looking thin with six weeks of winter left. A general rule for horses is about 1.5 to 2 percent of body weight in hay per day - call it 20 to 25 pounds per day for an average horse. Calculate your herd, multiply by your winter length, and then add 20 percent as a cushion. If your barn cannot hold that much, you need either more storage or a mid-winter hay arrangement with a local producer.
Cutting too late is the quality mistake that sneaks up on people. Everyone is busy in early summer, and it is easy to let a field go a week past ideal because there is always something else that needed doing. One late cutting does not ruin a season. But if you consistently cut at full head or beyond, you are producing stemmy, low-energy hay that your animals will sort through and waste. The animals eating it will need more of it to meet their nutritional needs, and your cost per unit of nutrition goes up significantly. Set a calendar reminder for first cutting based on your region's typical timing, and treat that date as a hard commitment.
Finally, do not skip the storage basics. Hay stored on bare ground wicks moisture from below and will mold from the bottom up. Stack on pallets, gravel, or concrete if at all possible. Round bales stored outside need to be placed on well-drained ground with space between them to allow air circulation. Cover them if you can - outside storage without cover loses the bottom one to two feet of every bale to weathering. The cost of a tarp or a simple hay cover pays for itself in the first winter.
