Using chicken wire where hardware cloth is needed ranks as the single most common and costly mistake in chicken keeping. The price difference simply does not justify the risk when you are talking about areas that require genuine security, including coop windows and vents, the lower portion of runs accessible to digging and reaching predators, and any openings large enough for a predator to enter. Save chicken wire for applications where you are genuinely only trying to contain chickens, such as temporary partitions within an already-secure run, and use hardware cloth everywhere that security actually matters.

Installing hardware cloth without proper overlap and attachment creates weak points that predators quickly identify and exploit. Pieces of hardware cloth that merely butt together without overlapping can be pushed apart by a determined raccoon, while staples spaced too far apart allow the mesh to be pulled away from framing. A coop with solid wooden walls but a gap under the door large enough for a weasel is not a secure coop. Survey every potential entry point with the mindset of a hungry predator looking for any way in, and address each weakness appropriately.
