Chronic overfeeding creates problems that develop more slowly but still cause suffering and shorten lives. Affected goats develop overgrown, misshapen hooves and chronic lameness. Obesity from excessive grain leads to fatty liver, reduced fertility, and difficulty kidding. Prevention focuses on maintaining a calcium to phosphorus ratio of at least two to one in the overall diet, often achieved by adding limestone or feeding alfalfa alongside grain. Any male goat straining to urinate, showing blood in urine, or repeatedly posturing without producing urine needs emergency veterinary care.
Enterotoxemia, commonly called overeating disease, occurs when the bacteria Clostridium perfringens proliferates in the gut following sudden carbohydrate excess. The bacteria produce toxins that kill goats, often within hours and sometimes before any symptoms appear. Vaccination with CD-T toxoid provides protection and is particularly important for goats receiving grain. A Saanen or Alpine in full production may reasonably consume three to four pounds of grain daily when producing a gallon or more of milk. Nigerian Dwarf goats produce less total volume but have remarkably high butterfat content, requiring proportionally similar energy density per pound of milk. Dairy breeders often use computerized feeding systems or carefully measured individual portions to match grain intake to production. Meat breeds including Boer goats and their crosses grow efficiently on forage with minimal grain supplementation. Show wethers being prepared for competition may receive more grain to achieve desired weight gains, but this requires careful monitoring to prevent health problems. Fiber breeds need energy to produce fleece but are also prone to obesity if overfed. Angora goats producing heavy fleece have higher nutritional demands than non-fiber breeds, but meeting those needs through quality forage and modest grain supplementation works better than heavy grain feeding. Miniature breeds including Pygmies and Nigerian Dwarfs become obese very easily because their small body size means even modest grain amounts represent a large percentage of total intake. The most common grain feeding mistake is feeding it when goats do not actually need it. A scoop of textured sweet feed contains different calories than the same scoop of plain rolled barley. Measuring by weight using a kitchen scale ensures you know exactly how much you are feeding. This becomes especially important when calculating rations for different animals or adjusting amounts as production changes. Once you know a particular container holds exactly one pound of your specific feed, you can measure by volume, but verify with a scale periodically.
Making sudden changes in grain type, amount, or feeding schedule invites digestive disaster. The rumen needs time to adapt its microbial population to any dietary change. Bringing home a new bag of different feed and immediately switching over can trigger acidosis even if the total amount stays the same. Similarly, skipping grain for several days and then resuming at normal levels creates problems. Any change should happen incrementally over at least a week. When buying grain, try to maintain consistency in brand and type rather than constantly switching based on whatever is on sale.
Ignoring the total diet when calculating grain undermines nutrition planning. Grain does not exist in isolation. It interacts with hay quality, browse availability, mineral supplementation, and water intake. A goat eating stemmy, low-quality hay needs more grain to meet energy requirements than one eating lush second-cutting alfalfa, but the alfalfa-fed goat might have excess calcium that changes mineral needs. Looking at individual feed components without considering the whole picture leads to imbalances. Using grain as a primary training tool or herd management technique creates persistent problems. Yes, goats come running for grain, and yes, shaking a feed bucket gets even the most stubborn goat into the barn. But relying on this strategy teaches goats to associate all human interaction with food, making them pushy, demanding, and difficult to handle when grain is not involved. It also means catching a sick goat that has lost appetite becomes nearly impossible since your usual bribe no longer works.
