Straw remains the most traditional and widely available bedding option for goats, and it works well in most situations when managed properly. Wheat straw is generally preferred because it has a stiffer structure that resists matting and holds up better than oat or barley straw. The hollow stems trap air for insulation and create gaps that allow moisture to filter down rather than pooling at the surface. Straw is relatively inexpensive in grain-producing areas, composts well, and goats generally do not find it palatable enough to eat significant quantities, which matters because bedding is not feed and should not be treated as such.
Wood shavings offer excellent absorbency and are widely available through feed stores and sawmills. Pine shavings are the most common choice and work well for most goat applications. The major advantage of shavings is their ability to absorb large amounts of moisture while remaining relatively dry at the surface, which is particularly helpful in areas with high humidity or during seasons when moisture introduction is constant. Pelleted bedding made from compressed wood or straw has become increasingly popular because of its extreme absorbency and ease of storage. These pellets expand when they absorb moisture, holding many times their weight in liquid while keeping the surface dry. The compact storage is a significant advantage if your barn space is limited, as a few bags of pellets equal many bales of straw in absorbent capacity. The main drawbacks are higher cost per unit of coverage and the fact that pellets can feel hard underfoot when first applied, becoming soft only after they absorb moisture and expand.
Sand works well in some situations, particularly in outdoor loafing areas and dry lots where drainage is good. Sand does not absorb moisture but rather allows it to pass through, keeping the surface dry when there is adequate drainage underneath. It provides excellent footing, does not harbor parasites the way organic bedding can, and is easy to rake clean of manure. However, sand is heavy to work with, expensive to initially install, and requires good underlying drainage to function properly. It is not appropriate for enclosed barns where moisture cannot drain away.
Hay should generally not be used as bedding because goats will eat it regardless of how soiled it becomes, wasting feed dollars and potentially ingesting parasites and bacteria from contaminated material. The only exception might be extremely moldy hay that goats refuse to eat, but even then straw or shavings are better choices. Some people use waste hay from feeders as supplemental bedding after goats have sorted through it, which reduces waste but still carries some risk of goats nibbling on soiled material.
Quantity requirements depend on your barn setup, climate, and management system. As a starting point, plan on four to six inches of bedding for sleeping areas, adding fresh material regularly to maintain dry conditions on top. A deep bedding system might build up to twelve inches or more over time, with fresh material added on top and the entire bed cleaned out periodically. More frequent complete cleanouts require less depth at any given time but more total bedding material over the course of a year.

Meat breeds kept in larger groups generate more waste and may require more robust bedding management systems. Commercial meat operations often use deep bedding systems that build up over an entire season and are cleaned out once or twice per year. This approach works when facility design allows for it, but it requires careful attention to moisture management and ammonia levels as the bed deepens.
Miniature breeds may do fine with somewhat less bedding depth simply because their smaller body weight compacts material less quickly. However, the same principles of dryness and cleanliness apply regardless of goat size. Kids of any breed need especially deep, soft bedding during their first weeks when they spend most of their time lying down and are vulnerable to chilling from cold ground.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
Using hay as bedding might seem economical when you have excess or moldy hay to dispose of, but goats will eat almost any hay regardless of condition, ingesting whatever parasites and bacteria the material has collected. The money saved on bedding often comes back as veterinary bills or lost productivity from parasite infections and digestive upset. Straw costs somewhat more than hay in some areas but does not get eaten and creates far fewer health problems. If you must use waste hay, ensure it is truly moldy enough that goats refuse to touch it entirely.
Allowing bedding to become wet and stay wet creates most of the health problems associated with poor bedding management.
