Feed is one of the largest ongoing costs of any farm operation, and what happens to it between when you buy it and when it goes into the feeder matters a lot more than most people account for. Spoilage, pest contamination, moisture damage, and heat degradation can quietly destroy the nutritional value of feed you've already paid for, and in the worst cases turn it from something that nourishes your animals into something that makes them sick. Getting feed storage right isn't complicated, but it does require thinking about it deliberately rather than just stacking bags wherever there's space.
The problems that bad feed storage creates show up in different ways. Sometimes it's obvious - a bag of layer pellets that's gone damp and moldy, a hay bale that's hot in the center and smells wrong when you open it. More often it's subtle: animals that are technically being fed but aren't thriving the way they should because the nutritional quality of their feed has degraded. Energy content drops in hay stored improperly. Vitamins in pelleted feeds deteriorate with heat and moisture. Mycotoxins from mold can cause reproductive problems, immune suppression, and a range of other health issues in animals consuming contaminated feed, and mycotoxin contamination isn't always obvious to the eye or nose.
The other cost is pests. A poorly secured feed room is an invitation to mice, rats, and birds - all of which contaminate feed with droppings, urine, and parasites while consuming it. One mouse in a feed room doesn't stay one mouse for long, and the contamination from a rodent infestation goes well beyond what they actually eat. Rodents are also a significant biosecurity risk, carrying diseases that can affect your livestock.

Section 2 Essential Requirements
Your feed storage area needs three things above all else: it must stay dry, it must be pest-resistant, and it must allow for proper air circulation. Everything else in feed storage is a refinement of those three requirements.
Dryness is the foundation. Moisture is the primary driver of mold growth in feed, and once mold is established in a feed bag or a hay bale, it spreads. Your storage area should have a roof that doesn't leak, walls that don't wick moisture, and a floor that stays dry. A concrete floor is preferable to bare dirt because concrete doesn't transmit moisture upward the way soil does, but even on concrete you want to store bagged feed on pallets rather than directly on the floor. A bag sitting on concrete in a humid building will absorb moisture from the contact point over time. Six inches of air space under the bag makes a difference.
Ventilation and temperature matter for bagged and processed feeds. Pelleted feeds, crumbles, and mixed grains deteriorate faster in heat. The vitamins in most commercial feeds, particularly the fat-soluble ones, are sensitive to both heat and oxidation. A feed room that hits 100 degrees in July is degrading your feed every day it sits there. Shade on the building, insulation in the roof, and ventilation that moves air through the space in summer all contribute to extending the useful life of stored feed. This isn't about refrigeration - it's about not storing feed in conditions that accelerate deterioration.
Pest exclusion requires thinking about every entry point in your storage area. Mice can squeeze through a gap the diameter of a pencil. If your feed room has gaps around pipes, gnawed boards, or spaces under doors, you have a pest problem waiting to happen or already happening. Metal garbage cans with tight-fitting lids are the workhorses of small-farm feed storage for good reason - they're essentially pest-proof when the lid seats properly. For bulk quantities, purpose-built metal feed bins or grain bins are the step up from there. Plastic bins can work but rodents can chew through them given enough motivation, which they have when they smell feed.
Hay storage deserves separate consideration because hay is a fire risk that most small farm operators don't think about until something happens. Hay that is baled too wet can heat from the inside through microbial activity, and in extreme cases that heating process can lead to spontaneous combustion. This is not a hypothetical risk - hay barn fires happen every year. Large-scale hay storage should be in a dedicated building separate from your house, your equipment, and your animals. Small quantities stored near livestock are somewhat unavoidable, but keep large reserves in a separate structure if at all possible.
For hay quality specifically: newly baled hay that's going into storage should be dry to the touch throughout - not just the outside of the bale. The stem should feel dry when you break it. Hay that was put up with too much moisture will smell sweet to the point of fermentation or will smell like vinegar, and bales that are warm inside when you open them are a warning sign. Your nose is a genuinely useful diagnostic tool for hay quality and you should use it every time you open a new lot.
Feed rotation is a requirement that sounds simple but requires discipline to actually do. First in, first out - the feed you purchased first gets used first. This prevents old feed from accumulating at the bottom of bins or in the back of storage areas while fresh feed gets used from the top. Older feed isn't necessarily bad, but it degrades over time and should move through the system before it sits long enough to be a concern.
Section 3 Daily Care And Management
Walk your feed storage area as part of your regular chores - you don't need to do a formal inspection every day, but you should be in there enough to notice when something is off. Spilled feed on the floor is an invitation to pests and should be cleaned up promptly. Evidence of rodent activity - droppings, gnaw marks on bags or containers, disturbed feed - needs to be addressed before it escalates. A couple of mouse traps positioned along the wall in a feed room is basic maintenance, not a sign of a problem.
Check bag seals when you open a new purchase. Bags that were damaged in transit or storage before you got them can admit moisture or pests. A compromised bag should be transferred immediately to a sealed container rather than stored as-is. Same goes for bags you've opened - pour what you're not using immediately into a sealed container rather than leaving the bag folded over and held with a clip. Clips and folds are not pest-proof. Metal or heavy plastic with a sealing lid is.
For hay, check your stored bales periodically for heat and smell. Stick your hand into the center of a bale if you can - a warm bale that wasn't warm when you stored it is telling you something is happening inside it. Pull that bale out and open it, and do not store it in an enclosed space while it's heating. Catching a potentially problematic bale early can save you from a fire and from feeding something that's lost nutritional value or developed mold.
Keep a written or simple digital record of when you purchased feed, the lot or batch information, and how many bags or what weight you took in. If you ever have an animal health issue that might be feed-related, this information helps you and your vet narrow down whether a specific lot of feed is the culprit. It's also useful for catching spoilage patterns - if you're consistently having quality problems with a product from a specific supplier during summer months, that pattern is worth knowing.
Section 4 Health Considerations
Mycotoxins are the health concern that makes bad feed storage genuinely dangerous rather than just economically wasteful. Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain mold species, and they're produced in the field, in storage, or both. You cannot see them - a bale or batch of feed can look normal, smell reasonably normal, and contain mycotoxin levels that cause serious health effects in livestock. Aflatoxins, fumonisins, vomitoxin, and zearalenone are the ones you hear about most often in livestock feed.
The clinical signs of mycotoxin exposure depend on the specific toxin and the level of exposure. Reduced feed intake is often the first thing you notice - animals that have been eating normally start leaving feed. Then you might see reduced production, weight loss, or in more severe cases neurological signs, reproductive failure (particularly early pregnancy loss), or immune suppression that makes animals more susceptible to infectious diseases. These signs are not specific to mycotoxins - they could mean a dozen things - but if multiple animals are showing them and they share the same feed source, that's a reason to suspect feed quality and get a sample tested.
Testing is available through your state's feed testing laboratory and through private labs. A basic mycotoxin panel costs between $30 and $75 depending on what you're testing for and gives you real information rather than guesses. If you suspect a feed quality problem, pull samples from multiple locations in the lot - the surface of a grain bin, the middle, from a bale - and submit them. Your veterinarian or extension agent can guide you on what tests are most appropriate for your animals and what you're seeing clinically.
Rodent-contaminated feed is a direct health risk. Rodent urine and feces can carry leptospirosis, salmonella, and hantavirus, among other things. Feed that shows evidence of heavy rodent contamination - extensive droppings throughout, urine smell, actual carcasses - should not be fed to animals. This is a hard call when you've paid for the feed, but it's the right call. Discard it and address the pest problem before it repeats.
Section 5 Breed Considerations
Different species and production classes have different sensitivities to feed quality problems, and your storage practices should account for those differences. Young stock, breeding animals, and pregnant or lactating females are the animals most vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies and to toxic compounds. If you're prioritizing feed quality across your operation, start with the feed going to these animals.
Small ruminants - goats and sheep - are particularly sensitive to certain mycotoxins and also to listeria, which can grow in poorly managed fermented feeds like silage or haylage. Goats in particular are known for being exploratory eaters and will sometimes consume feeds or feed components they shouldn't have access to if storage isn't secure. Their browsing behavior makes them more likely than cattle to investigate and consume unusual materials in a feed storage area.
Poultry are highly sensitive to aflatoxin, one of the most potent mycotoxins, and it can move from contaminated grain into eggs and meat at levels that create food safety concerns for human consumers. If you're raising poultry for eggs or meat, the quality of your grain storage matters for both your flock health and for the quality and safety of what your animals produce.
Swine are sensitive to zearalenone, a mycotoxin with estrogenic effects that at significant exposure levels causes reproductive failure in breeding animals and false heats in gilts. Vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol) causes reduced feed intake in pigs at levels that don't affect cattle much at all - pigs are significantly more sensitive. If you're raising pigs and seeing feed refusal without an obvious explanation, feed quality is worth investigating before other causes.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
Buying more feed than you can store properly is a mistake born of good intentions - bulk buying saves money per unit - that costs more than it saves when feed degrades in storage. Know your storage capacity before you buy. Know your realistic turnover rate. If you go through a ton of feed every six weeks, storing three tons is a savings on paper and a loss in practice if your facility isn't equipped to maintain quality across that storage time. Buy what you can store properly, even if the per-unit cost is higher.
Leaving feed bags unsealed or in their original packaging beyond what's immediately needed is the single most common pest invitation there is. Rodents can and will chew through paper bags, woven poly bags, and even some thinner plastics when they smell what's inside. If you opened the bag and didn't use it all, it goes into a sealed metal or hard plastic container before you leave the feed room. This rule needs to be applied without exceptions, including when you're tired at the end of a long day and the bag is almost empty anyway.
Using a shed or outbuilding that isn't weathertight for feed storage because it's convenient is a mistake that leads to moldy, contaminated feed within weeks in wet weather. Walk around your intended feed storage space on a rainy day and see where water intrudes. Look at the roof for daylight - if light gets through, water gets through. Assess the floor for signs of moisture - efflorescence on concrete, soft spots in a dirt floor. A building that leaks is not a feed storage building until the leaks are fixed, no matter how convenient the location.
Not labeling when feed was purchased or what's in unlabeled containers is a small habit failure that creates real problems. When you're trying to figure out how long feed has been sitting, or whether that bin contains layer pellets or starter crumble, or what lot number that hay came from when an animal gets sick, you want that information immediately and not to have to guess. A piece of tape and a permanent marker on every container and a simple notebook entry when you take in a new purchase is not an onerous system.
Failing to check new purchases before storing them is a mistake that introduces problems before your storage practices have any chance to prevent them. Feed that left the manufacturer or supplier in compromised condition - damaged bags, heat exposure in transit, poor storage at the co-op before you picked it up - is your problem once you've accepted it. Check bags for damage, feel for unusual moisture or heat, and smell what you're bringing in. A batch of pelleted feed that smells rancid or musty should go back, not into your storage area.
Ignoring the hay fire risk because you've never had a problem is the kind of mistake that only has to happen once. If you store significant quantities of hay, particularly if you buy from multiple sources and can't always verify how it was put up, develop the habit of checking bale temperatures in the first few weeks after storage. A meat thermometer pushed into the bale will tell you what you need to know. Hay above 150 degrees Fahrenheit is in the danger zone and needs to be moved out of enclosed storage immediately. Above 170 degrees it's an emergency. This doesn't happen often, but it happens, and the consequences of not catching it are severe.
