The problem is that heat lamps run extremely hot, and if they fall or are knocked into bedding, a fire can start within seconds. Every heat lamp needs a secure, failsafe mounting - not hung by the cord, not clipped with a single clip that can fail, but secured in a way that cannot result in it falling even if an animal bumps the cord or the fixture. Use a ceramic or metal fixture, not a plastic one. Keep lamps away from bedding. Use a heat lamp guard. When you're done with the lamp for the season, store it safely. Extension cords are not designed for permanent farm use and should never be treated as permanent wiring. If you need power in a location that doesn't have an outlet, have an outlet installed there. Extension cords that run through areas where animals, equipment, or doors can damage them are fire and shock hazards. Outdoor-rated extension cords for temporary use are acceptable for genuinely temporary situations - running a heat gun to thaw a pipe one time, for example. They're not acceptable as a chronic solution.
Smoke detectors and heat detectors belong in barns, not just homes. Many barns don't have any detection equipment at all, which means that a fire can be well established before anyone knows about it. Agricultural smoke and heat detectors are available that can send an alert to your phone or trigger an alarm in your house. For any barn where you house animals, detection equipment is a basic requirement. Understand that standard residential smoke detectors may not be appropriate for barn environments due to dust, humidity, and animal dander setting off false alarms - use equipment rated for agricultural use.
Fire extinguishers should be mounted in accessible locations throughout farm buildings, checked regularly, and replaced or recharged when needed. Know how to use them. Fire safety is a daily practice, not a one-time fix. Every time you walk through your barn, you should be looking at it with an awareness of fire risk. Accumulated cobwebs and dust on light fixtures and wiring are fuel and thermal insulation - clean them regularly. Debris in corners and under feeders builds up and provides ignition material - keep it cleared. Oily rags, fuel containers, and other flammable materials don't belong in or near the barn - store them separately in a metal container or designated area away from the main building.
Check heat lamps and extension cords every time you use them. Animals that have experienced a barn fire may be difficult to house in enclosed structures afterward, may show increased startle responses, and may need additional time and patient handling to reestablish trust in enclosed spaces.

Horses are among the most difficult to evacuate and among the most likely to panic in ways that cost them their lives. Having halters accessible near stalls at all times is essential. Knowing which horses lead easily and which are difficult in stressful situations shapes where you go first if you can only get a few animals out. Some fire safety experts recommend that if you cannot get a horse out safely, opening stall doors and letting them out on their own is better than nothing - some horses will find their way to safety if the path is clear.
Cattle are generally easier to move than horses in a fire if you can get them moving, but a panicked herd in an enclosed space is genuinely dangerous to humans as well as themselves. Dairy cattle that are in stanchions may need stanchions released before they can move at all. If you have animals in any kind of restraint system, know how to release it quickly.
Poultry in enclosed houses are extremely vulnerable in a fire and almost never survive in significant numbers. The priority with poultry houses is prevention and rapid detection - getting a fire suppressed before it fully involves the structure. Poultry house electrical systems running ventilation fans and heating equipment deserve the same rigorous inspection as any other farm building.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
The single most common and most costly mistake in farm fire safety is not doing an electrical inspection because the wiring seems to be working fine. Wiring that has been degrading for twenty years looks normal until it doesn't. The fact that a system has functioned without incident is not evidence that it's safe - it's evidence that you've been lucky. Heat lamps are responsible for a disproportionate number of agricultural fires specifically because they're treated as temporary equipment and mounted carelessly. Treat every heat lamp installation as if it needs to last the season. Mount it properly. Inspect it daily. If it doesn't have a proper mount, don't use it until it does.
Not having an evacuation plan and practicing it is a mistake that becomes obvious in the worst possible circumstances. People who have never thought through how they'd get their animals out under fire conditions make poor decisions under that kind of stress. Think it through now. Know which way each door opens.
