Cattle are tough animals that spend most of their lives looking perfectly fine, which is exactly what makes it so easy to miss something until it's gotten serious. They're prey animals by instinct, which means they're wired to hide weakness. A cow that's visibly sick in front of you has usually been sick for a while - she just got to the point where she couldn't hide it anymore. Knowing the common diseases that affect cattle doesn't turn you into a veterinarian, but it gives you a vocabulary and a framework for what you're seeing, which makes you a much better observer.
The most useful thing any small-scale cattle owner can do is develop a clear mental picture of what normal looks like for every animal in their herd. Normal posture, normal appetite, normal manure consistency, normal breathing, normal social behavior. When something changes - even subtly - you notice it against that baseline. That early notice is often the difference between a cattle disease that costs you a tube of antibiotic and one that costs you an animal.
This overview isn't meant to replace your vet or to give you a false sense of confidence in diagnosing and treating serious conditions on your own. It's meant to help you understand what's commonly seen in beef and dairy cattle on small farms, what the early warning signs look like from across the pen, and what kinds of conditions you should be ready to call your vet about quickly versus which ones you might reasonably monitor for a day before escalating. The diseases covered here range from the most common health issues you'll likely encounter to the more serious conditions that require immediate veterinary attention when they show up.
Building a relationship with a large animal vet before you have an emergency is one of the best investments you can make as a cattle owner. Know who you're going to call. Know their after-hours number. Know whether they do farm calls or whether you need to haul. That groundwork, laid before you have a cow down in the mud at 10 PM, makes every health crisis more manageable.
Section 2 Essential Requirements
Bovine respiratory disease - called BRD, or shipping fever when it follows transport - is by far the most common and economically significant disease in cattle, particularly in young stocker and feeder cattle. It's caused by a combination of stress, viral infection, and secondary bacterial infection that follows. The stress piece is important: weaning, transport, mixing with new cattle, weather changes, and poor nutrition all set the stage by knocking back the immune system. Once that window opens, respiratory viruses like IBR, BVDV, and BRSV move in, and bacteria like Mannheimia and Pasteurella finish the job.
What you'll see before you'd ever know the underlying cause: the animal is off by herself. She's not interested in feed when the others are eating. Her head is lower than usual. She may be standing with her back slightly arched. Get closer and you'll see faster-than-normal breathing, or breathing that takes visible effort - you can watch her ribs move more than they should. Her nose may have a heavier, possibly discolored discharge. Her eyes may look dull or slightly sunken. She may cough when moved. In a severe case she'll be mouth-breathing, which in a cow is a serious emergency sign. Early BRD responds well to antibiotics; late-stage cases have a much worse prognosis.
Pinkeye - infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis - is something you'll almost certainly deal with if you raise cattle long enough. It spreads fast through a herd, especially in summer when face flies are active and moving the Moraxella bovis bacteria from eye to eye. You'll notice it as a watery discharge from one eye, progressing to a thick, cloudy discharge and a visibly clouded or ulcerated cornea. The affected eye is sensitive to light and the animal will often keep it partially shut. Early cases can clear with topical or injectable treatment; advanced cases with deep ulcers may cause permanent vision loss or even loss of the eye. Keep face fly populations under control, separate affected animals to slow spread, and treat early.
Foot rot is a bacterial infection that enters through breaks in the skin between the toes, usually when cattle are standing in wet, muddy conditions for extended periods. It hits suddenly - a cow that was walking fine yesterday is badly lame today and doesn't want to bear weight on the affected foot. If you lift the foot and smell it, you'll notice a distinctive foul odor. The tissue between the toes is swollen and may be splitting. Foot rot responds well to antibiotics when caught early, but if it progresses to involve the joint, the outcome is much worse. Clean, dry footing and regular hoof maintenance help prevent it.
Bloat shows up as a rapidly developing distension of the left side of the animal - the rumen is on the left, and when gas builds up that it can't release, the left flank swells dramatically and becomes tight to the touch. Frothy bloat happens most often when cattle graze lush, rapidly growing legumes like clover or alfalfa, which trap gas as a foam that can't be belched out normally. Free gas bloat has different causes - often an obstruction or a down cow that can't maintain a normal posture to belch. A mildly bloated cow that's still moving and eating may resolve on her own or with a drench to break up the foam. A severely bloated cow that's down or in respiratory distress is an emergency - her stomach is compressing her lungs and she can die in minutes without intervention.
Blackleg is a clostridial disease that kills young cattle fast - often so fast that the first sign you notice is a dead animal. It's caused by bacteria that live in the soil and produce toxins that destroy muscle tissue rapidly. Animals typically affected are well-nourished cattle between six months and two years of age. You may see sudden lameness, swelling over a large muscle group, and depression before death, but often there's no warning at all. The saving grace is that blackleg is almost completely preventable with a standard clostridial vaccine given in two doses to young cattle and then on a booster schedule. If you're not vaccinating for blackleg, start now.
Section 3 Daily Care And Management
Your daily management routine is your first line of disease defense, and it doesn't require any special training - just consistent attention. Walk through your cattle every single day with your eyes open and your mind on what you're seeing. Count heads first so you know everyone is there. Then watch how they're moving, how they're standing, and how they react to your presence. A cow that doesn't lift her head when you enter the pen is telling you something worth investigating.
Feed time is your best diagnostic opportunity. Cattle are creatures of habit and they eat on schedule. An animal that skips a meal or that hangs at the back of the bunk when she's normally first in line is flagging herself for a closer look. Watch manure consistency during your walks - healthy cattle on good pasture should have firm, well-formed patties. Loose, watery manure or manure with an unusual color or content (undigested grain, blood, mucus) means something is off somewhere in the digestive system.
Cleanliness in water sources matters more than most people think. Green, algae-heavy water tanks that cattle won't drink from result in dehydrated animals whose immune function and milk production both suffer. Keep tanks clean, keep water fresh, and in hot weather make sure cattle have access to shade near their water source so they're not choosing between staying cool and staying hydrated. A cow on a hot day needs to drink a lot more water than you might expect - thirty to fifty gallons in peak heat for a lactating cow - and she won't drink her full requirement from a foul tank.
Temperature is a practical tool when you're not sure whether an animal is sick or just having a slow day. A normal cattle temperature runs between 101 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything above 103.5 is a fever and should be taken seriously, especially if other symptoms are present. A thermometer and a basic understanding of what normal is gives you much better information than guessing.
Section 4 Health Considerations
Internal parasites are a slow, quiet drain on cattle health that rarely announce themselves with dramatic symptoms. Cattle carrying a heavy worm burden - particularly the barber pole worm in wet climates, and various stomach and intestinal worms across all regions - don't collapse. They just never thrive the way they should. They're thinner. Their coats are rougher. They don't put weight on at the rate the genetics say they should. They're more vulnerable to other diseases because their immune systems are working harder than they should have to.
The important shift in thinking about parasites in cattle is that blanket calendar-based deworming is no longer the recommended approach in most situations. Overuse of dewormers has created resistance in parasite populations, and what worked reliably fifteen years ago may not be working the same way now on your farm. Targeted selective treatment - based on fecal egg counts that tell you the actual parasite burden in individual animals - is the smarter approach and your vet can walk you through how to do it. The point is: don't assume your cattle are fine on parasites just because you dewormed them on schedule.
Hardware disease sounds strange but it's genuinely common in cattle. Cattle are not selective grazers - they'll pick up and swallow wire, staples, nails, and small metal objects along with their forage. That hardware sits in the reticulum (a compartment of the stomach) and can migrate forward into the heart sac, causing serious problems. A magnetic bolus given to cattle at purchase or at weaning attracts metal objects and holds them in place. It's cheap, it's simple, and it prevents a problem that's expensive and often fatal when it goes wrong. Ask your vet about it if you haven't used them before.
Pink milk and off-flavored milk in a dairy cow usually means mastitis - infection of the mammary tissue. It's one of the most common conditions in dairy cattle of all kinds. You'll notice it most clearly at milking time: the quarter involved may feel harder or warmer than the others, milk may be watery or have visible flakes or clots, and the cow may flinch or kick when that quarter is handled. Mastitis ranges from subclinical (barely noticeable, detected only by testing) to severe systemic illness where the cow is running a high fever and is clearly very sick. The treatment approach depends entirely on which type of bacteria is involved and how severe the infection is, which is another reason your vet relationship matters.
Section 5 Breed Considerations
Disease susceptibility and resilience aren't random across breeds - genetics plays a real role, and matching your breed choice to your region and management system reduces your health challenges before you buy your first animal.
British breeds like Angus and Hereford are well-suited to temperate climates and have been selected over generations for good feed efficiency and moderate frame size. They don't carry the same heat and humidity tolerance as Brahman-influenced breeds, and in the Deep South or Gulf Coast regions, straight British cattle often struggle with external parasites and heat stress in ways that compromise their overall health and performance. If you're in a hot, humid region and you're committed to running British genetics, be prepared to work harder on parasite management and shade provision than producers in cooler climates.
Brahman and Brahman-cross cattle bring significant advantages in hot climates: better tick and fly resistance, superior heat tolerance, and a natural hardiness in rough forage conditions. The tradeoff that matters for small farm management is temperament - Brahman-influenced cattle are often flightier and more reactive than British breeds, and on a small farm where you're doing most of your own handling, that matters. Stressed cattle are harder to treat, harder to observe accurately, and harder to work safely. The calmer your cattle are, the easier every health management task becomes.
Dairy breeds - Jerseys in particular - have different health vulnerabilities than beef cattle. Milk fever (hypocalcemia around calving), ketosis (energy deficit in early lactation), and displaced abomasum are conditions that are essentially specific to dairy cattle in heavy production and aren't things beef cattle owners typically deal with at the same rate. If you're keeping a family cow, knowing these production-related conditions is part of taking good care of her.
Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid
Waiting too long to call the vet is the most costly mistake cattle owners make with health problems, and it's understandable - vet calls cost money, cattle can look like they're getting better when they're actually declining, and there's a cultural tradition in farming of toughing things out. But cattle that look noticeably sick are usually sicker than they look, and the difference between catching BRD on day one versus day three is often the difference between a treatable case and a dead or permanently damaged animal. The rule of thumb most experienced producers use is simple: if you're not sure, call. A phone consult costs nothing and your vet would rather talk you through a false alarm than arrive to an animal that can't be saved.
Using the wrong antibiotic, or using antibiotics without knowing whether they're appropriate for the condition, is a mistake that has consequences beyond the individual animal. Antibiotic resistance in cattle pathogens is a real and growing problem, and using broad-spectrum antibiotics indiscriminately - or using them for viral conditions where they have no effect - makes it worse. Different antibiotics work for different bacteria, and what's labeled for respiratory disease isn't necessarily the right choice for foot rot or mastitis. Talk to your vet about building a basic treatment protocol for the most common conditions you're likely to face, and know what's on your shelf and what it's actually for.
Not vaccinating is a mistake with potentially fatal consequences because some of the diseases vaccines prevent - blackleg and other clostridial diseases in particular - kill so fast and so reliably that there's no second chance. A two-dose primary series in young cattle followed by annual boosters is basic, inexpensive, and effective. Respiratory vaccine programs are somewhat more complicated because there are multiple viruses and bacteria involved and the protocols vary by operation type and risk level, but your vet can help you design a sensible program for your specific situation. Skipping vaccination because the cattle look fine is a bet you'll win most years and lose badly when you don't.
Misreading recovery is a subtle mistake but an important one. A cow that seemed sick, got treated, and looks a little better the next morning hasn't necessarily turned the corner. She might be heading in the right direction, or she might be in that deceptive middle ground where she looks slightly better but the infection is still winning. Completing a full treatment course as prescribed - not stopping two days in because she looks okay - is important. Pulled cattle back into the herd before they're fully recovered is another version of the same error: the stress of reintegration can set back an animal that wasn't quite ready.
Ignoring biosecurity when bringing new cattle onto your property continues to trip up experienced producers who should know better. The excitement of new animals, the logistics of arrival day, the assumption that they look healthy enough - all of it conspires to make people skip the quarantine step. Then the new cow has a bit of shipping fever, sneezes on the fence line, and two weeks later you have cattle sick across your whole herd. A dedicated quarantine pen doesn't have to be elaborate, but it does need to exist and you need to actually use it every single time new cattle arrive, no matter how healthy they look or how reputable the source is.
Overlooking the environment as a disease driver is a mistake that shows up in high mastitis rates in dairy cattle kept in dirty conditions, elevated foot rot incidence in cattle standing in mud and manure, and respiratory problems in cattle packed into poorly ventilated barns. You can vaccinate and deworm and do everything else right and still have sick cattle if they're living in conditions that overwhelm their defenses. Clean water, good drainage, appropriate space, and ventilation are not optional extras - they're the foundation that makes every other health management effort actually work.
