While the antibodies are not perfectly matched to diseases sheep encounter, they do provide meaningful immunity and are far better than nothing. If you have dairy cows or access to fresh cow colostrum from a neighbor, this can work when sheep colostrum is unavailable. Goat colostrum also works well for lambs. The key is having some form of real colostrum available rather than relying solely on commercial products.

Respiratory pathogens face antibody defense in lambs that nursed well. When you see disease outbreaks in young lambs, consider whether colostrum intake has been adequate across the lamb crop, as problems often cluster in lambs that did not get enough.

Ewe vaccination before lambing directly affects the quality of protection passed through colostrum. Giving CDT vaccine about four weeks before expected lambing ensures ewes have high antibody levels when they produce colostrum. A ewe that has never been vaccinated or whose vaccinations lapsed produces colostrum with lower antibody content, even if the volume seems adequate. Prolific breeds that regularly produce triplets and quads create colostrum management challenges simply through numbers. These breeds benefit from more intensive monitoring during early lambing hours and often require supplemental feeding to ensure all lambs receive adequate colostrum. Having frozen colostrum or quality replacer on hand is essentially mandatory when running highly prolific genetics.

First-time mothers across all breeds present higher risk for colostrum problems than experienced ewes. Yearling ewes lambing for the first time may have smaller udders with less colostrum volume, may be confused about the lambing process and slow to allow nursing, or may not have fully developed mothering instincts. Watch ewe lambs and first-time lambers more closely than mature ewes, and be prepared to intervene with assistance if lambs are not nursing within the first hour or two. Many first-time mothers figure things out, but some need help that experienced ewes do not require.

Dairy sheep breeds produce abundant milk but may have udder conformation that creates nursing challenges. Large teats, very pendulous udders, or excess wool around the udder can prevent small newborn lambs from finding and latching onto teats even when milk is plentiful. Trimming wool from udders before lambing helps with access. The advantage of hardy, self-sufficient breeds is fewer interventions on average, not elimination of the need to monitor and be prepared to help.

Assuming that a lamb near the udder is nursing successfully is one of the most common mistakes during lambing season. Lambs naturally seek warmth and the familiar smell of their dam, so they congregate near the udder whether or not they are actually getting milk. A weak lamb may appear to be nursing when it is really just mouthing the wool or resting against the ewe without the strength to actually suckle. Check for full bellies, satisfied behavior, and actual milk on the lamb's muzzle rather than assuming proximity equals success.

Waiting too long to intervene when lambs are struggling to nurse wastes the precious hours when antibody absorption is still possible. The desire to let nature take its course is understandable, but sheep have been bred for thousands of years under human management, and many modern breeds benefit from assistance that wild ancestors never received. A lamb struggling at two hours old is not building character - it is losing the window for effective colostrum uptake. Intervene early when things are not going well rather than hoping the situation improves on its own.

Using inappropriate colostrum sources or supplements when real colostrum is needed undermines the entire purpose of colostrum feeding. Products labeled as milk replacer do not contain antibodies and do not provide passive immunity regardless of how nutritionally complete they may be. Similarly, regular cow milk, goat milk, or lamb milk replacer provides nutrition but no disease protection. When a lamb needs colostrum, it needs actual colostrum from a sheep, goat, or cow, or a true colostrum replacer product containing immunoglobulins.

Not maintaining a frozen colostrum supply leaves you without options when emergencies arise during lambing. Ewes die during birth, ewes develop mastitis and cannot nurse, ewes reject lambs, lambs are too weak to nurse - situations arise every lambing season where having colostrum ready makes the difference between saving lambs and losing them. The time to collect and freeze colostrum is when you have excess, not when you need it. Make building your colostrum bank an ongoing part of lambing management.

Feeding cold lambs before warming them can cause death rather than saving the lamb. A severely hypothermic lamb cannot digest milk, and colostrum sitting in a cold stomach can essentially ferment and cause bloat or fatal metabolic disturbance. Always check temperature first. A lamb with normal temperature can be fed immediately, but a cold lamb needs warming until temperature is above 100 degrees before attempting to feed. This may feel like dangerous delay when you want to act, but warming first is essential.

Overfeeding individual meals in an attempt to catch up on colostrum intake causes problems of its own. A lamb's stomach holds roughly one ounce per pound of body weight, and exceeding this causes discomfort, reflux, and potentially aspiration.
