Taking the time to choose healthy goats from the start saves you money, heartache, and countless hours of dealing with problems that should never have come through your gate.

The challenge is that unhealthy goats do not always look unhealthy, at least not to an untrained eye. Sellers may not mention problems they know about, and they may genuinely be unaware of issues that have not yet become obvious. A goat can carry diseases like CAE or CL for months or years before showing clinical signs, shedding the pathogen the entire time and exposing other animals. A goat can look fat and sleek while harboring a massive parasite load that will crash the moment stress hits. Learning to evaluate animals beyond first impressions is a skill that protects your investment and your existing animals.

This guide walks you through the process of choosing goats, from knowing what questions to ask before you even see the animal, to conducting your own hands-on evaluation, to understanding which diseases justify testing and what those test results mean. Whether you are buying your first pair of pets or adding genetics to an established breeding program, these principles apply. The excitement of new animals should always be balanced with careful evaluation, because the best goat deals are not necessarily the cheapest goats but the ones that arrive healthy and stay that way.

Think of this as protecting your herd before it ever faces a threat. Once a contagious disease establishes itself on your property, eradicating it ranges from expensive and time-consuming to essentially impossible. Every goat that crosses your fence line is a potential vector. Your job is to make sure the odds are in your favor.

Section 2 Essential Requirements

Before you even look at a goat in person, you need to gather information about where it comes from. A reputable seller should be willing to answer questions about their herd's health history, vaccination protocols, deworming practices, and any testing they perform. Red flags at this stage include vague answers, defensiveness about health questions, or pressure to make a quick decision. Good breeders understand that educated buyers protect everyone's herds and welcome thorough inquiries.

Ask specifically about disease testing. At minimum, you want to know about CAE, which stands for Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis. This viral disease causes arthritis in adults and neurological problems in kids, and it spreads primarily through infected colostrum and milk. Herds that test and maintain CAE-free status represent lower risk, though you should verify when testing was last done and whether all animals were tested or just a sample. CL, or Caseous Lymphadenitis, is another disease to ask about. It causes abscesses that eventually rupture and spread highly contagious material through the environment. Herds with a history of CL abscesses present ongoing risk even if no active abscesses are visible at purchase time.

Johnes disease is less commonly tested in goats than in cattle and sheep, but serious breeders may have testing information available. This chronic wasting disease is incurable and infectious, making it a herd-killer if it gains a foothold. If the seller has Johnes testing records, that is a positive sign of careful management even if your own herd has not been tested.

Request vaccination records if available. You want to know when the goat last received CD&T vaccine and whether kids received an initial series with booster or just a single shot. Knowing the deworming history helps you understand what resistance issues might follow the goat to your property. A goat that has been dewormed monthly with the same product may carry parasites resistant to that entire drug class.

Ask why the goat is being sold. There are plenty of legitimate reasons, such as herd reduction, excess kids, or animals that do not fit a breeding program's goals. Vague answers or stories that do not add up warrant caution. Nobody likes to admit they are selling a problem animal, but animals with chronic health issues, difficult temperaments, or poor producers often end up on the market dressed in positive language. Trust your instincts if something feels off.

Section 3 Daily Care And Management

When you arrive to evaluate goats, start by watching them from a distance before anyone catches them for you. Healthy goats are curious, alert, and active. They should be interested in your presence, even if cautiously, rather than standing depressed in a corner or lying down when the rest of the herd is up and moving. Watch how they move without the stress of being handled. Do they walk freely, or do they limp? Do they interact normally with herdmates, or do they hang back as if they lack energy?

Look at the overall condition of the herd, not just the individual you are considering. If multiple animals look rough, have visible abscesses, show signs of respiratory illness, or appear poorly fed, that tells you something about the seller's management practices and the disease pressure in that environment. You might fall in love with one apparently healthy goat in a sick herd, but that animal has been exposed to whatever is affecting its neighbors.

Once you can approach the goat, conduct a systematic physical evaluation. Start at the head. Eyes should be bright and clear with no discharge, squinting, or cloudiness. A pale inner eyelid, visible when you gently pull down the lower lid, indicates anemia that often signals heavy parasite infection. The ideal color is dark pink to red. Pale pink, white, or grayish coloring is a warning sign. The nose should be clean and dry without mucus discharge. Check inside the mouth for broken teeth, abnormal jaw alignment, or swelling. Run your hands under the jaw feeling for swollen lymph nodes or the fluid accumulation called bottle jaw that indicates severe parasitism or liver fluke infection.

Move down the body checking for lumps anywhere, as these could be injection site reactions, abscesses, or tumors. Feel along the spine and ribs. You should be able to feel ribs with gentle pressure but not see them prominently. A goat that looks healthy but has a visible spine or sharp hip bones is either starving, parasitized, or sick with something chronic.

Section 4 Health Considerations

Beyond what your eyes and hands tell you, certain diseases require laboratory testing to detect. CAE testing is strongly recommended before purchasing any goat that will have contact with your existing herd or whose kids might be bottle fed on pooled milk. The test is a simple blood draw that your veterinarian or the seller's vet can perform, with results typically available within a week or two depending on the lab. A negative test performed within the past year from a herd with no new introductions provides reasonable confidence, though no test is perfect and false negatives can occur.

CL testing is more complicated because no blood test reliably detects all infected animals. Physical examination for active or healed abscesses is the primary screening tool. Check carefully around the head and neck, behind the ears, in front of the shoulders, and in the flank area where lymph nodes are located. Raised lumps in these locations warrant serious concern. Some sellers will drain abscesses before showing goats or will sell animals with abscesses that have not yet become obvious. If you have any doubt, quarantine the new animal and monitor for developing lumps.

Parasites present ongoing evaluation challenges because egg counts vary with time of day, season, and other factors. A fecal egg count from the day you visit gives you a snapshot but not a complete picture. What matters more is how the goat has been managed. Animals from intensive rotational grazing systems with smart deworming protocols generally arrive with fewer resistant parasites than those from crowded permanent paddocks where routine mass treatments are the norm.

Pregnancy status matters if you are buying does. An unexpected pregnancy complicates your plans and introduces unknown genetics. If the seller claims a doe is open, ask when she was last with a buck. If she could be pregnant, factor that into your decision. Similarly, knowing a doe's kidding history helps you assess her value and avoid surprises like a doe that has been retired from breeding due to complications.

Consider requiring a veterinary prepurchase exam for valuable animals, similar to what horse buyers routinely do. This costs money but provides professional evaluation and creates documentation of the animal's condition at purchase time. For expensive breeding stock, this investment often pays for itself by uncovering problems or providing peace of mind.

Section 5 Breed Considerations

Different breeds come with different evaluation considerations, though the fundamentals of health assessment remain constant. Dairy breeds should have well-attached udders with functional teats when evaluating milking does. A pendulous udder that hangs below the hocks will be difficult to milk and prone to injury. Check teat structure for extra teats, blind teats, or abnormalities that would interfere with machine milking or nursing kids. Previous mastitis can leave scar tissue that affects milk flow, so palpate the udder thoroughly when the doe is not freshly milked.

Meat breed evaluation emphasizes muscling and structural soundness. A Boer or Kiko intended for breeding should have strong legs, correct feet, and a wide stance that supports a heavy, muscular body. Narrow chests, sickle hocks, or splayed feet indicate structural problems that worsen with age and pass to offspring. These breeds are also prone to heavier parasite burdens in some production systems, making careful evaluation of body condition and eyelid color especially important.

Fiber breeds like Angoras require coat quality assessment that takes experience to evaluate accurately. If you are new to fiber goats, bring someone knowledgeable to help you assess fiber density, staple length, and overall quality. Angoras are also more susceptible to stress and weather extremes than many other breeds, so overall vigor and condition matter tremendously. A fiber goat that looks thin or stressed may struggle to recover.

Miniature breeds follow the same health evaluation principles but are physically smaller and may mature more slowly than standard breeds. Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats in particular should have proportional udders and sound structure despite their small size. Pygmy goats being evaluated as pets still deserve the same health scrutiny as any other purchase, because even a pet deserves to arrive healthy and stay that way.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The biggest mistake new goat buyers make is falling in love with an animal before doing proper evaluation. That adorable kid with the floppy ears becomes yours in your heart the moment you see it, and suddenly you are rationalizing away every warning sign because you cannot bear to walk away. Decide before you visit what your deal-breakers are and stick to them. If the goat fails your evaluation, it fails. No amount of cuteness changes the reality of underlying health problems.

Buying from auction houses or livestock markets introduces enormous disease risk. Animals at these facilities come from everywhere, mingle in holding pens, share water troughs, and exchange parasites and pathogens freely. Even a healthy goat entering an auction can pick up something in the few hours it spends there. Unless you are prepared for extensive quarantine and testing, avoid auctions entirely. The low prices reflect the risk.

Skipping quarantine for new arrivals is a common and costly error. Even animals from reputable sellers with good testing programs deserve at least thirty days of separation from your existing herd. This allows time for incubating diseases to manifest and gives you a chance to observe the new goat's health before risking your established animals. Quarantine means complete physical separation with no nose-to-nose contact, separate water sources, and ideally separate caretaker clothing and equipment.

Trusting sellers completely without verification gets people burned repeatedly. This does not mean assuming everyone lies, but it does mean understanding that sellers have incentive to present their animals favorably. Verify test results with the original laboratory when possible. Check references with other buyers. Visit the farm in person rather than buying sight unseen. Reputable sellers understand this skepticism and cooperate willingly because they have nothing to hide.

Buying single goats sets both you and the goat up for problems. Goats are herd animals that suffer genuine distress when kept alone. They may scream constantly, escape fences to find companionship, become depressed, or develop behavioral problems. Always purchase at least two goats, and if you are buying to add to an existing herd, plan for quarantine arrangements that still provide social contact with another new animal during that period.

Focusing only on price while ignoring value leads to expensive disappointments. A cheap goat that introduces CL to your herd costs you far more than a properly tested animal at a fair price. A doe with bargain-basement genetics produces mediocre offspring that underperform for years. The up-front purchase price is a small fraction of what you will spend on any goat over its lifetime, so invest appropriately in quality animals from the beginning.

Neglecting to get documentation leaves you vulnerable later. Get any health test results, registration papers, vaccination records, and sales receipts in writing. A handshake deal with verbal assurances provides no recourse if problems emerge. Written documentation also helps you maintain accurate records going forward and provides proof of genetic background if you sell offspring from registered stock.
