A breeding soundness examination done by a large animal veterinarian before breeding season will evaluate his semen quality, libido, and physical ability to breed. It costs a modest amount and is worth every dollar compared to the cost of a missed calf crop. Bulls should also be in good body condition - not fat, but not thin. A thin bull heading into a 60-day breeding season is going to lose weight fast, and his performance will suffer.

A cow in standing heat will stand still while other cattle mount her - that's the classic sign, and it's the most reliable one. Other signs include a swollen, moist vulva, restless behavior, bawling more than normal, mucus discharge, and riding other cows herself without standing when they try to mount her. Walking fence lines, reduced feed intake, and dirt or mud marks on the rump from other cattle mounting her are all clues you're looking for.

On a small farm every cow needs to pay her way, and an open cow costs you feed, time, and a calf that didn't happen.
As calving season approaches, separate cows that are close to calving into a smaller, easier-to-monitor area. Signs that calving is imminent include a relaxed, sunken appearance around the tailhead as the pelvic ligaments soften, a full, waxed udder, and restless behavior - getting up and down repeatedly, looking at her flank, separating herself from the herd. Once active labor begins, most cows will calve without any help within an hour or two. If a cow has been in hard labor for more than 30 minutes with no progress or the water sac has been showing for more than an hour without delivery, it's time to check and potentially assist or call for help.

Retained placenta is one of the most common post-calving issues you'll run into. Most cows pass their placenta within 6 to 8 hours of calving. Repeat breeding - a cow that keeps coming into heat but won't hold a pregnancy - can have several causes. Sometimes it's the bull, sometimes it's the cow, sometimes it's an infectious disease in the herd. Trichomoniasis, caused by a protozoan parasite, and bovine vibriosis, caused by bacteria, are both venereal diseases spread by bulls during natural service that cause early embryonic death and repeat breeding. If you're seeing an unusual number of cows not settling on your bull, trich testing is something to look into before assuming the problem lies with the cows.
Scours - diarrhea in young calves - is the leading killer of newborn cattle and typically strikes in the first two to three weeks of life. The best defense is colostrum. A calf that gets a good feed of high-quality colostrum within the first four to six hours of life gets a significant head start against the pathogens that cause scours. Watch young calves closely. A calf that's bright, alert, and nursing aggressively is doing well. Some breeds have a strong reputation for calving ease - meaning the calves are born with less difficulty and less need for human assistance - while others are known for large birth weights and a higher rate of calving problems. Angus is probably the most widely cited breed for calving ease among beef cattle, which is one reason it dominates commercial cow-calf operations. Hereford is also generally considered a moderate, manageable breed for small farms. Charolais and Simmental, on the other hand, are known for heavier muscled calves that can present more calving challenges, especially on smaller-framed cows.
For someone with a small herd and limited experience, starting with cattle that have a reputation for calving ease is the practical choice. A difficult calving in the middle of the night, with a calf that's backward or too big, is a steep learning curve. There's nothing wrong with making your first few seasons as smooth as possible by choosing genetics that work in your favor.
For dairy purposes, Jerseys are known for strong reproductive efficiency and milk production relative to their body size. They're a popular choice for homestead operations that want a family milk cow or two. Holstein is the dominant commercial dairy breed but is considerably larger and more demanding nutritionally. Milking Shorthorn and Brown Swiss are less common but represent good options for small-scale dairy producers who want a dual-purpose animal capable of producing both milk and reasonable beef calves.
Gestation length for cattle averages around 283 days, roughly 9 months and 10 days, though there's normal variation of a couple of weeks in either direction depending on the breed, the sex of the calf, and individual variation. Keeping track of breeding dates - whether from observed heats and bull turnout or from an AI protocol - lets you calculate expected calving dates and plan accordingly. Calving windows that are tighter and more predictable are easier to manage and result in a more uniform calf crop at weaning.

The biggest reproductive mistake small-herd cattle owners make is not managing body condition going into and coming out of calving season. Cows that calve in poor condition take longer to return to cycling, get bred later in the next breeding season, and calve later the following year. That slippage compounds. Finally, not keeping records is a mistake that seems small early on but compounds fast. When you can't remember which cow was bred when, you can't predict calving dates. When you don't know a cow's calving history, you can't identify chronic poor performers. A simple notebook or a basic spreadsheet tracking each cow by ear tag, breeding date, expected calving date, calving ease score, and calf birthweight gives you the information you need to make good culling and replacement decisions over time. Cattle that don't calve every year, that require assistance every time, or that produce consistently poor calves are costing you more than they're returning. Records are how you see that clearly.
