A cow that is going off feed, running a slight fever, or dealing with early-stage foot rot is not going to come to the gate and tell you about it. Deworm strategically rather than on a rigid calendar schedule, rotating between drug classes to slow the development of resistance. Fecal egg counts from your veterinarian can tell you which animals actually need deworming rather than treating the whole herd when only some animals have significant parasite loads. External parasites - flies, lice, and mange - are more of a summer problem for most operations, and controlling flies through pour-on products, back rubbers, or fly tags reduces both the irritation to cattle and the transmission of disease that flies carry.

A basic first aid and treatment kit is something every cattle owner should have in the barn before they need it. You should have a clinical thermometer - a normal temperature for cattle is 101.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, and an animal running 104 or above has a fever that warrants attention. Section 3 Daily Care And Management

Daily health monitoring is built into the routine of feeding and watering cattle when you do it right. Walk through the herd at feeding time and look at every animal. You are looking for the one standing alone while others are eating, the one whose head is lower than normal, the animal that is not moving normally, the cow whose flank looks different from yesterday. You are listening for coughing - one or two cattle occasionally coughing is normal, a group of animals coughing repeatedly is a respiratory problem developing. You are watching for the cow that is drooling excessively, grinding her teeth, or kicking at her belly. None of these individual signs is a diagnosis, but any of them tells you to take a closer look.

Take a temperature on any animal that looks off to you. The thermometer is your single most useful diagnostic tool - it tells you quickly whether what you are seeing is a fever-based illness or something else. An animal with a normal temperature that is moving stiffly might have a foot problem. An animal with a temperature of 104.5 that is standing apart from the herd is likely fighting an infection of some kind. The temperature reading shapes what you do next and helps you communicate clearly when you call your veterinarian.

Keep records. Not elaborate records, but basic ones - which animals you vaccinated and when, what treatments you administered and what for, which calves were born on what dates and their birth weights if you weigh them, body condition scores through the year. Records make patterns visible over time, help you communicate efficiently with your veterinarian, and are essential if you ever want to demonstrate the health management history of animals you are selling. A simple notebook or a basic spreadsheet is all this requires.

Section 4 Health Considerations

Respiratory disease is the single most common and costly illness in cattle, particularly in calves and in cattle that have been stressed by weaning, transport, commingling with unfamiliar animals, or adverse weather. The classic presentation is a calf or young animal that is hanging back from the group, has a dull expression, is running a fever, and may have a clear or cloudy nasal discharge. Ears may droop. Breathing may be labored in more advanced cases. Catching respiratory illness in the early stages - when the animal is just slightly off but still on its feet and eating somewhat - gives you the best chance of a quick, complete recovery. A scouring calf loses fluids and electrolytes rapidly, and the cause of death in most scour cases is dehydration rather than the infection itself. A young calf that starts scouring needs fluid support quickly - oral electrolytes given via bottle or esophageal feeder can maintain hydration while the calf's immune system fights the infection. The danger signs in a scouring calf are sunken eyes, skin that tents when you pinch it and does not spring back quickly, and a calf that is too weak to stand or nurse. These calves need professional help urgently. A calf that is scouring but is still bright, still trying to nurse, and is not obviously dehydrated can often be managed with aggressive oral electrolyte therapy over 24 to 48 hours.

Foot rot is a common bacterial infection that enters through breaks in the skin between the toes, typically in wet conditions or on rough ground. The presentation is classic - sudden, severe lameness in one foot, with visible swelling between the toes and a distinctive foul smell when you clean the foot. Foot rot responds well to antibiotic treatment when caught early, and the lameness can resolve completely. Cattle that have had foot rot in a wet environment repeatedly may develop more chronic hoof problems that require trimming and more intensive management.

The calving period is when the most serious health events tend to cluster, and being prepared is what separates a manageable calving season from a catastrophic one. Know the signs of normal labor progression - active labor with visible straining should produce a calf within two hours of the feet appearing, less if it is a subsequent calving. Know when to intervene and when to call for help. A first-calf heifer in hard labor for more than an hour with no progress needs assistance. Keep a calving kit with clean gloves, lubricant, calving chains or straps if you are going to pull calves yourself, and colostrum replacer for calves that do not nurse in the first hours. A calf that does not receive adequate colostrum in the first six hours of life has dramatically reduced immunity for its entire first year, which is why making sure every calf nurses or is supplemented is so critical.

Section 5 Breed Considerations

Breed influences health management in several ways that are worth knowing when you are setting up your approach. British breeds like Angus and Hereford are generally hardy and not prone to many breed-specific health problems. They calve easily relative to many breeds, particularly Angus, which is one reason Angus cows are so popular as a first cattle experience for small operations. Calving ease is a real and significant practical consideration - a breed that calves easily reduces the nighttime vigils, the difficult births, and the calf losses that come with breeds prone to dystocia.

Continental breeds like Charolais and Simmental produce large, fast-growing calves, which is great for beef production but increases dystocia risk, particularly when these bulls are used on smaller-framed cows. If you are crossbreeding, the sire breed's birth weight and calving ease EPDs matter enormously. A Charolais bull with poor calving ease EPDs on first-calf heifers is a reliable way to have a terrible calving season.

Zebu-influenced breeds are heat-adapted and resistant to certain tick-borne diseases and external parasites in ways that British breeds are not, which can be a genuine health advantage in hot, humid climates with high parasite pressure. In cold climates, these same breeds may struggle with cold stress that British or Continental breeds handle without difficulty. Breed selection relative to your climate is a legitimate health management consideration, not just a production one.

Highly selected dairy breeds like Holsteins have been bred for milk production to a degree that has created some production-related health vulnerabilities - they are more prone to metabolic diseases around calving like milk fever and ketosis than beef breeds. If you are milking a high-producing dairy cow, understanding these production diseases and managing the transition period around calving carefully is part of the health management picture.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The single biggest health management mistake cattle owners make is not looking closely enough at individual animals daily. A busy week where you throw hay over the fence and drive away rather than walking through the herd and actually looking at each animal can mean a health problem progresses from easily treatable to serious before you notice it. Cattle will not volunteer that something is wrong - you have to look. Make it a non-negotiable part of your morning chore routine. It takes ten minutes, and those ten minutes catch problems when they are still manageable.

Waiting too long to call for professional help is the mistake that turns a recoverable situation into a loss. The calculation that cattle owners frequently make - "let me watch it one more day before I call" - is often the calculation that costs them either the animal or significantly higher treatment expense compared to earlier intervention. If an animal is off feed, running a fever, and not obviously improving after one day, that is the point to make the call rather than the point to wait another day. It also creates vulnerability in young stock that have never been vaccinated and are relying on whatever immunity they received through colostrum. Set a calendar reminder for your annual vaccination events and treat them as non-negotiable rather than tasks that can be pushed to next month.

Handling cattle roughly when administering treatments or vaccines undoes the benefit of the treatment itself in ways that are not immediately visible. Research on vaccine response consistently shows that cattle subjected to significant stress during vaccination periods have blunted immune responses and lower protection from the vaccine than calm cattle handled gently. Beyond the vaccination effect, rough handling around health management tasks trains cattle to be difficult and evasive during future health procedures, creating an escalating cycle where each treatment becomes more stressful than the last. Work calmly, work methodically, and the cattle cooperate better each time you need them to.

Ignoring body condition until it becomes obvious is a mistake that sets herds up for expensive catch-up feeding and poor reproductive performance. Body condition scoring is a simple skill you can learn in a single extension workshop or from a short online resource, and it gives you an objective way to assess whether your cattle are on track nutritionally before the consequences of being behind show up as thin cows at calving time. Score your cattle in the fall when they come off summer pasture, again in late winter, and at calving. Animals that are trending too thin need more feed now, not later. Animals that are in good condition going into winter can tolerate weather and lower-quality hay better than animals that are already behind.
