The technique gets its name from the days when a candle was the brightest concentrated light source available. Modern candlers use LED flashlights, dedicated egg candling lights, or even smartphone flashlights in a pinch. The principle remains the same. A bright, focused light shining against the shell illuminates the contents, and by looking at the patterns of light and shadow, you can assess what is happening inside without cracking the shell open.

Candling cannot tell you everything. Some shells are too dark or too thick to see through clearly, and even with pale-shelled eggs, interpretation takes practice. But with experience, you learn to recognize the signs of healthy development versus eggs that have stopped growing, eggs that were never fertile, and eggs that have become contaminated and might explode in the incubator if left too long. Work over a towel or padded surface so that if you fumble an egg, it has a soft landing. Keep your work area organized with a clear space for eggs you have checked and separate areas for any eggs you are removing.

Record-keeping supplies help you track what you observe. A notebook where you record candling observations, date, and any eggs removed lets you look back and understand patterns in your hatches. Some keepers use a grease pencil to mark eggs directly with notes or numbers. Consistent records over multiple hatches teach you more than any single observation and help you identify fertility issues, incubator problems, or genetics affecting hatchability.

Timing your candling sessions properly balances the desire to see what is happening against the need to minimize disturbance to developing eggs. Most hatchers candle at least twice during incubation, typically around day seven and again around day fourteen for chicken eggs, with the second candling sometimes done at day eighteen when eggs go into lockdown for hatching. Candling too frequently unnecessarily exposes eggs to handling, temperature fluctuations, and contamination risk. Candling too rarely means problems go undetected longer than they need to.

Be quick and gentle when handling eggs for candling. Remove only a few eggs at a time from the incubator so they do not cool excessively, candle them efficiently, and return them promptly. Do not leave eggs sitting out at room temperature for extended periods. The embryo is adapted to the steady warmth of the incubator, and prolonged cooling can cause developmental problems or death. Aim to have each egg out of the incubator for no more than a few minutes.

At each candling, you are looking for specific developmental milestones and warning signs. Early candling around day seven should show blood vessels spreading out from a developing embryo, appearing as a spider web or network of red lines. Later candling shows a dark mass that is the growing chick, movement if you watch carefully, and an air cell at the blunt end of the egg that grows larger as incubation progresses. Eggs that show no development, have blood rings indicating early death, or appear cloudy and contaminated should be removed and discarded.

Section 4 Health Considerations

Recognizing a developing egg versus a clear or quitter egg is the core skill of candling. A fertile, developing egg shows blood vessels by day seven in chickens, spreading outward from a small dark spot that is the embryo. The blood vessels are red and branch like tiny rivers. By day ten or so, the embryo has grown enough that it appears as a dark shadow, and you may see movement. The air cell at the blunt end of the egg grows larger as moisture leaves the egg through the shell, and this air cell expansion is a sign that incubation conditions are working correctly.

A clear egg shows no development at all. When you candle it, you see the yolk floating inside with no blood vessels, no embryo, and no change from how a fresh egg would appear. Clear eggs were never fertile or the embryo died before any visible development occurred. These eggs should be removed because they will not hatch and may eventually rot and explode, contaminating the incubator.

Blood rings indicate early embryonic death. A blood ring appears as a red circle or ring visible inside the egg, formed when the developing blood vessels separate from the dying embryo and collect in a ring shape. Once you see a blood ring, that egg will not hatch and should be removed. Blood rings often result from temperature fluctuations, improper humidity, or genetic problems with the embryo.

Quitters are eggs where the embryo died after showing initial development. You might see blood vessels that stop abruptly, a dark mass that does not move or is oddly positioned, or an egg that looks different from the others in your batch. Quitters can die for many reasons including genetics, infection, temperature problems, or damage from handling. They should be removed to prevent bacterial growth and contamination.

Contaminated eggs may appear cloudy, show dark spots that are not embryos, or emit an odor when handled. These eggs contain bacteria that have entered through the shell and are multiplying inside. Contaminated eggs are dangerous because they can explode in the incubator, spreading bacteria over all your other eggs. If you suspect an egg is contaminated, remove it immediately and dispose of it carefully, preferably by sealing it in a bag before discarding to contain any rupture.

Section 5 Seasonal Considerations

Fertility rates vary with the seasons, which affects what you see when candling. Roosters are most fertile in spring when days are lengthening, and hens produce more eggs with better shell quality during this period as well. Spring hatches often show higher fertility rates and better development than eggs collected during the shorter days of winter or the heat stress of high summer. If you are seeing many clear eggs during candling, consider whether the timing of your breeding season might be affecting fertility.

Temperature extremes in your incubation space affect development and candling results. If your incubator is in a location where ambient temperatures swing significantly, such as an unheated garage or a room with afternoon sun, the eggs may experience temperature fluctuations that cause blood rings or quitters. Maintain a stable environment around your incubator, and if you are seeing many early deaths on candling, investigate whether temperature stability might be a factor.

Humidity during incubation affects the air cell development you observe during candling. In dry climates or heated winter homes, eggs may lose moisture too quickly, resulting in air cells that are larger than ideal by hatch time. In humid summer conditions, air cells may not develop enough. Monitoring air cell size during candling sessions gives you feedback on your humidity management and helps you make adjustments for the remainder of incubation.

Power outages are more common during storm seasons and can cause embryonic death that shows up on your next candling. If your incubator loses power for more than a few hours, some embryos may die while others survive depending on how far along they were and how much the temperature dropped. Candling after a power event helps you assess the damage and remove any eggs that stopped developing so you can focus on caring for the remaining viable eggs.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

Candling too often disturbs the eggs more than necessary without providing additional useful information. Daily candling is not helpful and introduces repeated handling, temperature fluctuations, and contamination opportunities. Stick to the standard candling schedule of around day seven and day fourteen, with possibly an additional check at lockdown. Resist the temptation to peek constantly, no matter how exciting it is to watch development.

Candling in a room that is not dark enough makes it difficult to see clearly and leads to misidentification of egg status. You might think an egg is clear when actually you just cannot see the blood vessels through the ambient light. Find a truly dark space, let your eyes adjust before you begin, and give yourself the best chance at accurate assessment.

Removing eggs too quickly without being certain they are non-viable means you might discard viable embryos. Early development can be subtle, especially in dark-shelled eggs or eggs from older hens with thicker shells. If you are unsure whether an egg is developing or not, mark it and wait for the next candling session rather than throwing it out. A few more days of incubation will make the status clearer one way or another.

Leaving non-viable eggs in the incubator too long increases the risk of bacterial contamination. Eggs that have died start to decompose, and bacteria can multiply to the point where the egg explodes, showering your developing eggs with contaminated material. When you are confident an egg has quit or is contaminated, remove it promptly. The safety of your remaining eggs depends on keeping the incubator clean.

Holding eggs out of the incubator too long during candling chills the embryos and can cause developmental problems or death. Work efficiently, handling only a few eggs at a time, and return them to the incubator quickly. Misinterpreting what you see leads to wrong decisions. Until you have experience, the shapes and shadows inside eggs can be confusing. Build your skills by candling eggs at known stages, looking at reference photos, and comparing what you see to documented images of development at various days of incubation. Neglecting hygiene during candling introduces contamination. Dirty hands transfer bacteria to eggshells, which can then enter the egg and infect the embryo. Wash your hands before each candling session, handle eggs gently without rolling them in dirt or debris, and work in a clean area. The same hygiene that matters during egg collection and setting matters every time you handle eggs throughout incubation.
