But not every birth goes that smoothly, and even calves born without complications can run into trouble in the first days of life - scours, failure to nurse adequately, rejection by the dam, or the effects of a difficult birth. Knowing what a healthy newborn calf looks like, what timeline to expect for it to stand and nurse, and when something is off gives you the ability to intervene at the right moment rather than either doing too much too soon or waiting too long.

Calves purchased for feeding or bottle-raising bring their own set of challenges. Whether you are picking up a day-old dairy calf from a local farm or buying a group of weaned beef calves for a summer growing project, understanding their nutritional needs, stress vulnerabilities, and health risks at each stage makes you a more effective manager and cuts your death loss significantly.

After that, the intestinal cells change and those antibodies can no longer pass through. A calf barn or sheltered calving area with clean, dry bedding gives the cow and calf a safe environment for those critical first hours. A calf that is shivering, cold to the touch, or unable to stand may need warming before it has the energy to nurse - a warming box, heat lamps at a safe distance, or even bringing the calf inside temporarily can make the difference.

As calves grow beyond the first week, your management shifts toward monitoring their ongoing growth and nutrition. If they are nursing on the cow, confirm regularly that the cow is producing enough milk and that the calf is growing at a consistent rate. A calf that seems perpetually hungry, is losing condition, or has a rough coat may not be getting enough from the dam and may need supplemental feeding or may indicate a health issue with the cow.

Water access matters as soon as calves start nibbling on grass or hay, usually within the first few weeks. Young calves are small and a full-sized water tank with steep sides can be a drowning hazard. Make sure calves can reach water without falling in, and provide a clean, accessible source sized for young animals.

Combine that with how alert and active the calf is, and you have a reasonable picture of how urgent the situation is.

Oral electrolytes are the backbone of scours treatment for calves that can still stand and swallow. Commercial calf electrolyte products provide sodium, potassium, bicarbonate, and glucose to replace what is lost through diarrhea. Do not replace milk with electrolytes - continue milk feeding and add electrolyte feedings in between. Stopping milk starves the calf at a time when it needs energy to fight off infection.

Calf pneumonia is the second leading cause of death in young cattle and tends to follow stress - shipping, weaning, weather changes, or anything that compromises the immune system. Watch for calves that are slow to get up in the morning, have a fever above 104 degrees, are breathing faster or harder than their pen mates, or have a nasal discharge that has gone from clear to cloudy or thick. Respiratory illness caught in the first 24 to 48 hours responds much better to treatment than pneumonia that has been developing for several days. Keep antibiotic products on hand and talk with your vet in advance about what to use and at what dosage - waiting until you have a sick calf to figure out your treatment protocol costs you time and the calf's recovery.

Navel ill is a bacterial infection that enters through the umbilical cord stump and can spread to the joints and internal organs if not caught early. Dip newborn navels in iodine - 7 percent tincture of iodine works well - immediately after birth and again a few hours later. Check the navel daily for the first week for swelling, heat, or discharge. A navel that is moist, swollen, or smells bad needs immediate veterinary attention.

Calf care is calf care across breeds in most respects, but there are some differences worth knowing based on the type of cattle you are working with.

Beef breeds that are raised in range conditions have generally been selected over time for calves that get up quickly, nurse aggressively, and are hardy in cold or wet weather. Angus calves, in particular, are known for being vigorous at birth and relatively easy to manage through the neonatal period. Continental European breeds like Charolais and Limousin tend to throw larger calves, which increases dystocia risk, especially in first-calf heifers. If you are calving heifers of these breeds, plan to check them more frequently during late pregnancy and be ready to assist.

Dairy breed calves - Holsteins and Jerseys primarily - are almost universally separated from their dams at birth in commercial dairy operations, which means many of them arrive at small farms and homesteads as very young calves being raised on bottles or buckets without their mothers. These calves can be excellent, and many people raise them successfully, but they do not have the benefit of the cow's colostrum timing and natural nursing behavior. You need to be more deliberate about colostrum delivery, feeding schedules, and housing warmth when raising dairy calves without their dams.

Miniature cattle breeds produce proportionally smaller calves, which in some ways makes calving easier but also means the calves have less cold tolerance and a smaller margin for setbacks in the first days of life. The same principles apply, just scaled down - and a small calf that misses a feeding is in proportionally more trouble than a larger beef calf in the same situation.

Section 6 Common Mistakes To Avoid

The most costly mistake in calf care is undervaluing colostrum and letting the timing window close. This happens in a few ways. Sometimes a new calf owner does not realize how critical that first 6-hour window is and assumes the calf will figure it out on its own schedule. A second common mistake is treating scours with an antibiotic before assessing hydration status. Antibiotics have a role in some cases of scours, particularly bacterial infections, but they do not treat dehydration. A calf dying of scours is dying of dehydration, not the infection itself, and the most critical treatment is fluid replacement. Many people reach for antibiotics because it feels like doing something, but if the calf is dehydrated and you are not addressing that, you are losing the battle even if you are treating the cause.

Overcrowding calving areas is a mistake that compounds over a calving season. It starts because you want to be able to watch multiple cows at once, which is understandable. But as each successive cow calves in the same pen, the pathogen load in the bedding builds up - E. coli, rotavirus, Cryptosporidium - and by mid-season you have a bacterial soup that no amount of careful management can fully overcome. Move cow-calf pairs out of the calving area as soon as they are established and nursing well. Clean and re-bed the calving area frequently. If you are having a scours outbreak, the calving environment is almost always a contributing factor.

For bottle calves in particular, a common error is using cow's milk replacer instead of a milk replacer specifically formulated for calves. The protein and fat profiles are different, and calf digestive systems are designed for bovine milk with specific fat sources. Using the wrong product leads to nutritional scours and poor growth that people sometimes attribute to disease when it is actually a nutrition problem. Read labels and use a calf-specific product with milk-based protein rather than soy-based, especially for young calves under three weeks old.

Finally, a mistake that is easy to make when everything is going well: skipping those twice-daily checks because the calves look fine. The pace of decline in a sick calf can be startling. A calf that looks slightly off in the morning can be severely dehydrated by afternoon. Regular observation gives you the lead time to intervene while your options are still good.
