Advanced bumblefoot involves significant swelling extending beyond the immediate infection site, possible involvement of tendons or bone, and obvious pain that seriously affects the duck's ability to walk. The infection has been developing for some time and may require multiple treatment sessions to fully resolve. Systemic antibiotics from a veterinarian may be necessary in addition to local wound care. Without treatment, advanced bumblefoot can spread to become a systemic infection that kills the duck.
Complications from bumblefoot treatment include recurrence if infection was not completely cleared, damage to foot structures from aggressive surgical removal, and secondary infections in treatment wounds. Ducks molting during fall may be somewhat more vulnerable due to the nutritional demands of feather replacement.
Winter challenges include frozen ground that is hard on feet and wet conditions from snow and ice that keep feet constantly damp. Provide well-bedded shelter areas where ducks can rest on soft, dry surfaces rather than frozen ground. Watch for frostbite on feet in addition to bumblefoot, though the conditions that cause one often prevent the other since frozen ground is not usually muddy and soft bedding provides insulation. Indoor housing during the coldest periods protects feet from weather extremes.

Neglecting cleanliness in duck housing allows bacterial populations to build to levels where any foot injury almost certainly becomes infected.
