Straining usually occurs in episodes with rests in between. A sow might strain for 30 seconds, rest for a minute or two, then strain again. This pattern continues as babies are delivered.

Babies are typically born in quick succession once the process begins. The first baby is usually delivered within one to three hours of obvious straining. Subsequent babies follow in intervals of roughly 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the litter and the individual sow. A sow delivering six babies typically takes one to three hours total from first baby to last baby. By the end of labor, she has delivered all babies and the placenta.

During and after delivery, the sow is focused on her babies. She licks the amniotic sacs off newborns, eats the placentas, and begins allowing babies to nurse. If labor is proceeding normally, the sow seems calm once babies are delivered, begins grooming, and settles into motherhood. The whole process from first contractions to settled nursing mother typically occurs over four to six hours.

Signs that labor is progressing normally include: the sow is straining periodically with apparent effort and seems to be making progress; babies are being delivered at reasonable intervals of 5 to 20 minutes apart; each baby appears to be alive and responsive once delivered; the sow is responsive between contractions and appears alert; no excessive bleeding is occurring; and the sow seems calm once babies are delivered and begins mothering them.

Signs that labor might be problematic include: the sow has been straining for more than 30 minutes with no baby delivered; only one or two babies have been delivered over a period of several hours with no additional progress despite obvious straining; babies are being delivered but are stillborn or appear severely compromised; the sow appears extremely distressed, making unusual vocalizations, or seems to be in severe pain; the sow seems unresponsive or lethargic between contractions; excessive bleeding is occurring; the sow appears confused or neurologically compromised; or the sow seems to have stopped laboring but you suspect there are still babies inside based on abdominal palpation or other observations.

The timeline of labor matters greatly. If a sow is straining continuously for 30 minutes with no progress in delivering a baby, that is concerning and warrants veterinary contact. If only one baby has been delivered over the course of two hours and there is no progress toward additional babies, that is concerning. If labor began and babies were delivered normally but then labor seems to have completely stopped and you suspect there are additional babies not yet delivered, that is concerning and warrants contact with the veterinarian.

Conversely, a sow laboring quietly for a few hours and delivering babies at normal intervals with appropriate spacing needs no veterinary intervention. A sow that delivers the entire litter and settles into normal mothering behavior needs no intervention. The key is distinguishing between normal variation in labor presentation and true problems requiring help.

After delivery is complete, a few specific situations warrant veterinary contact. If the sow retains placenta beyond a few hours after delivery, that is concerning. If the sow delivers babies but seems to have more babies inside that are not being delivered, that is concerning. If the sow is hemorrhaging significantly, that is an emergency. If the sow seems extremely ill or collapsed after delivery, that is an emergency.

Section 4 Care Requirements

Before labor occurs, preparation is essential. Have your veterinarian's contact information, including emergency after-hours number and procedure, readily available. Do not be searching for veterinarian contact information during an emergency. Have the address and directions to the veterinary clinic and to the nearest 24-hour emergency clinic readily available. Know how long travel will take to reach emergency care.

Prepare transport if the sow will need to be transported during labor. A quiet, secure box with appropriate bedding where the sow can be transported safely and with minimal stress should be ready. Transporting a laboring sow is stressful and should be avoided if possible, but if veterinary care is needed, safe transport is essential.

During labor, the sow should be in a quiet, calm environment with minimal disturbance. Stress during labor can interfere with contractions and labor progression. However, observation is necessary to monitor whether labor is progressing normally. The goal is to be observant without being intrusive. Many breeders simply position themselves where they can observe without constant handling or disturbance.

Ensure that the sow has access to water during labor if she wants it, though many laboring sows don't drink. She should not be forcibly fed or watered. Having food and water available should she want them is appropriate.

Keep detailed notes of labor timeline: when obvious contractions began, when the first baby was delivered, when each subsequent baby was delivered, when labor seemed to end. This timeline will be valuable information if veterinary care becomes necessary. Note any problems or unusual occurrences.

Do not attempt manual assistance unless absolutely necessary and you have been specifically instructed by a veterinarian on what to do. Inexperienced manual assistance can cause more harm than good. Gentle external support of the sow's abdomen during contractions might occasionally be helpful, but pulling or aggressive manipulation is harmful.

After delivery seems complete, allow time for the sow to clean herself and her babies and to settle into mothering before drawing conclusions about whether labor is fully complete. Sometimes final placentas are expelled after a resting period, and additional babies occasionally appear after a resting period.

Section 5 Potential Complications

Dystocia, or difficult labor, is the primary complication during guinea pig birth. Dystocia can result from babies that are too large to pass through the birth canal, a mother whose pelvis is too small, weakness of contractions preventing effective pushing, or misalignment of babies in the birth canal. Dystocia can be fatal for both mother and babies if not treated. A sow in dystocia is unable to deliver babies and is at risk for exhaustion, hemorrhage, rupture of the uterus, and death. Babies are at risk for hypoxia and stillbirth as labor is prolonged.

Prolonged labor causes hypoxia in developing babies. The longer babies remain in the birth canal without oxygen from placental circulation and unable to breathe air, the more damage occurs. Hypoxia causes brain damage, organ damage, and fetal death. Babies born after prolonged labor are frequently stillborn or born alive but severely compromised.

Maternal hemorrhage during birth is a serious emergency. If the sow is bleeding excessively from the vulva during delivery, she might be experiencing uterine rupture or other serious injury. Hemorrhage can lead to shock and death if not treated emergently. If you observe excessive bleeding at any point during labor, that is an immediate emergency warranting urgent veterinary care.

Uterine rupture can occur with forceful contractions or with dystocia where babies are being forced through a birth canal too small to accommodate them. A ruptured uterus is life-threatening and requires emergency surgical intervention. A sow with uterine rupture will show signs of shock, severe pain, hemorrhage, and will rapidly decline if not treated emergently.

Retained babies or retained placenta after delivery can lead to infection and sepsis if not removed. Dead or decomposing fetal tissues left in the uterus create an ideal environment for bacterial growth. Infection can spread through the uterine wall into the bloodstream, causing sepsis and death. If the sow delivers some babies but you suspect more are retained, veterinary assessment is needed.

Toxemia can develop during or immediately after labor if maternal metabolic stress becomes overwhelming. A sow struggling with difficult labor experiences profound metabolic stress. Combined with the stress of delivering and immediately nursing, toxemia can develop rapidly after birth. If a sow becomes unresponsive or confused during or shortly after labor, toxemia might be developing.

Section 6 When To Call The Vet

Contact your veterinarian immediately if any of the following occur: the sow has been straining for more than 30 minutes with no baby delivered; babies have been delivered but labor seems to have stopped completely and you suspect additional babies are inside; excessive bleeding is occurring from the vulva; the sow becomes unresponsive, confused, or shows neurological signs; the sow seems to be in severe pain or extreme distress; any baby delivered appears severely compromised or dead; the sow seems unable to stop bleeding even between babies; or you have any other concerns about labor progression that you cannot explain or that seem unusual.

Early communication is important. If you have suspicions about whether labor is progressing normally, contact your veterinarian. Describe what you are observing, provide the timeline of labor, and ask for professional assessment of whether in-person examination is needed. Your veterinarian might reassure you that what you are observing is normal, or might recommend that the sow come in for examination. Err on the side of caution: it is better to contact and be told everything is fine than to wait and have problems escalate.

If you are ever unsure whether to call, call. Veterinarians understand that breeders are uncertain about labor, and they want to hear from you if you have concerns. They would much rather talk you through a normal labor and have you report that things are fine than have you wait and miss critical time when the sow needed help.

Once your veterinarian has examined the sow and determined that intervention is needed, follow their guidance completely. If they recommend cesarean section delivery, do not delay. If they recommend monitoring and recommend specific signs to watch for that would warrant emergency care, pay careful attention and follow those instructions. Your veterinarian is your partner in this emergency and their expertise is critical.

Section 7 Additional Considerations

Labor complications are one of the most serious risks of guinea pig breeding. Even when everything is done right, dystocia and other labor complications can occur. Some sows simply have structural problems making delivery difficult. Some fetuses are abnormally large or malpositioned. Some sows' bodies simply don't contract effectively. These problems cannot always be predicted or prevented, only recognized and treated when they occur.

This is why having veterinary support available before any breeding occurs is absolutely essential. When labor problems develop, there is no time for searching for a veterinarian or navigating unknown systems. Having an established relationship with a veterinarian who knows you and your animals means that emergency care can be accessed rapidly. This time difference can mean the difference between a sow surviving and dying.

It is also worth noting that even with expert veterinary care available, some labor complications result in death of the sow or babies or both. Cesarean section delivery in guinea pigs carries risks and does not guarantee successful outcomes. Some uterine ruptures or severe dystocia are not survivable even with surgical intervention. Accepting this reality before breeding occurs helps breeders understand that they cannot guarantee outcomes no matter how excellent their care and available resources are.

For responsible breeders, the understanding that labor can go wrong and can go wrong suddenly creates the foundation for appropriate preparation and appropriate decision-making if problems occur. Rather than being shocked and unprepared when problems occur, responsible breeders have anticipated the possibility, have established relationships and resources, and can act quickly and effectively to get the sow appropriate emergency care.

Guinea pig breeding puts animals at risk of serious complications and death. If you are not prepared for the possibility of emergencies, if you are not willing to commit resources to emergency veterinary care, and if you are not willing to accept outcomes where despite your best efforts, animals suffer or die, you should not breed.
