Leftover placenta or retained babies can also occur, particularly if toxemia affected labor. Permanent organ damage is also a risk in sows who survive severe toxemia. The liver and kidneys bear the brunt of processing the toxic metabolic byproducts, and severe or prolonged toxemia can cause permanent damage to these organs. A sow who recovers from toxemia may have reduced quality of life or diminished lifespan due to compromised organ function.

It's essential to have identified an exotic animal veterinarian before breeding begins. Standard small animal vets may not be experienced with guinea pig obstetrics or toxemia treatment. You should have the veterinarian's contact information readily available and know their emergency procedures. Some pregnancies go wrong, and having a relationship with an exotic vet established before an emergency occurs means quicker treatment when it matters most.
If your sow goes into labor and you notice signs of toxemia developing, such as sudden weakness, inability to push effectively, or loss of consciousness, emergency veterinary care including possible cesarean section delivery may be necessary.
