Early labor signs appear within twenty-four to forty-eight hours before active delivery begins. The female may refuse food or eat only small amounts. She becomes restless, moving around the cage and rearranging bedding. She strains as if having mild contractions. Her vulva may become swollen and slightly reddened. If you observe these signs, this is the appropriate time to remove the male to his prepared separate enclosure.
Active labor is when you see regular contractions, visible straining, and pups being delivered. Removing the male during active labor is appropriate and ensures he's not present during birth.
The postpartum period begins once the last pup is delivered. The female is still expelling placenta and may be bleeding. She's exhausted and extremely focused on her pups. If the male is still present, remove him immediately. Within the first few hours postpartum is critical.
The immediate hours after delivery, roughly the first six hours, carry the highest risk of postpartum breeding. A female can enter estrus and allow mating within hours of giving birth. The male's enclosure must be fully equipped and comfortable. He shouldn't be moved to a small, sparse cage as punishment. His new space should be at least as large as his previous enclosure, with familiar enrichment items if possible. He needs hideouts, food, water, and comfortable bedding. The enclosure should be in a calm location where he can't directly observe the female if that tends to agitate him, but he shouldn't be isolated where he hears activity and can't see anything, as this creates anxiety.
Companionship for the separated male matters for his welfare. A male guinea pig is a social animal and doesn't thrive in isolation. The female's enclosure should be arranged for her comfort and the pups' safety. She needs a secure hideout where she can nurse pups privately. She needs unrestricted access to food and water. The enclosure should have space for her to move away from pups briefly for self-care while remaining able to respond to their needs. Depth of bedding should be sufficient for nesting but not so deep that pups can get lost.
Minimal disturbance of the female and pups during the first weeks postpartum supports recovery and pup bonding. Handling should be minimal, cage cleaning should be efficient without extended disturbance, and stress should be minimized. The quiet environment without the male present supports this.
Water quality is critical for nursing females. She drinks substantially more than normal, and water sources need to be clean, fresh, and working reliably. Check water bottles or bowls multiple times daily to ensure adequate supply.

She needs unlimited hay, significantly increased pellet portions, and daily high-quality vegetables particularly rich in vitamin C. Masculine behavior problems can emerge in males that were previously bonded with females and are suddenly separated. Some males become territorial, aggressive toward companions in their new space, or display sexual frustration behaviors.
