Before pregnancy, there are no outward signs that pelvic fusion is occurring or has occurred. The sow looks, acts, and feels completely normal. During pregnancy in a sow with a flexible symphysis, you can sometimes feel the separation developing in the final days before delivery. By gently placing a finger on the pelvic area just above the vulva, you may detect a widening gap as the bones separate. A gap of about one finger width or more suggests the pelvis is opening appropriately for delivery. Section 5 Potential Complications
The primary complication of pelvic fusion is dystocia, and in guinea pigs, dystocia from a fused pelvis is among the most dangerous reproductive emergencies in small animal medicine.
When a pregnant sow with a fused pelvis goes into labor, the pups cannot pass through the birth canal. The uterus continues to contract, pushing the pups against the rigid pelvic opening with increasing force. This can cause uterine rupture, where the muscular wall of the uterus tears under the pressure. Uterine rupture causes massive internal bleeding and is rapidly fatal without emergency surgery. Guinea pigs are challenging surgical patients because of their small size, their sensitivity to anesthesia, and the additional physiological stress that prolonged labor has already placed on their bodies.
