Lice infestations are one of the most common parasitic conditions seen in guinea pigs. They are frequently acquired from other guinea pigs through direct contact, which means new guinea pigs brought into a household, guinea pigs from pet stores, and guinea pigs that interact with others at events or breeding facilities are at the highest risk. Lice can also be introduced through contaminated bedding or supplies, though this is less common since the lice cannot survive for extended periods away from a host guinea pig.
The good news is that lice infestations in guinea pigs are very treatable. Once diagnosed, appropriate antiparasitic medication typically clears the infestation effectively. The key is recognizing the problem, getting the right diagnosis, and following through with the complete treatment protocol to ensure all lice and their eggs are eliminated. The most common way guinea pigs acquire lice is through direct contact with another infested guinea pig. Even well-maintained pet stores cannot entirely prevent parasites from entering their populations, and the stress of the pet store environment can suppress guinea pigs' immune systems, making them more susceptible to infestation.
Contaminated bedding, cage accessories, or grooming tools can serve as indirect transmission pathways, though this is less efficient than direct guinea pig-to-guinea pig contact. Lice are obligate parasites, meaning they must live on a host to survive, and they can only survive for a limited time away from a guinea pig, typically a few days at most. However, during that window, they can transfer to a new host through shared items. This is why it is important not to share bedding, grooming tools, or cage items between guinea pig groups without proper cleaning.
Stress and immune suppression play an important role in determining whether a guinea pig that is exposed to lice develops a symptomatic infestation. Many guinea pigs carry a small number of lice at any given time without showing noticeable symptoms. When the guinea pig's immune system is strong and the parasite load is low, the body keeps the lice population in check. However, when stress, illness, poor nutrition, vitamin C deficiency, or other factors weaken the immune system, the lice population can multiply rapidly and overwhelm the guinea pig's natural defenses, leading to a visible and symptomatic infestation.
The environment itself does not spontaneously produce lice, as they must come from an infested animal. However, certain environmental conditions can contribute to the severity of an infestation once it is established. Crowded housing conditions allow lice to spread easily between cagemates. Poor hygiene and infrequent cage cleaning can increase the guinea pig's overall parasite burden. It is worth noting that guinea pig lice are very different from human head lice, and the two cannot cross-infect between species. If your guinea pig has lice, you cannot catch them. Similarly, if someone in your household has head lice, they cannot pass them to your guinea pigs. Each lice species has evolved to live on its specific host and cannot survive on other species.
Section 3 Symptoms
The symptoms of a lice infestation in guinea pigs typically develop gradually and increase in severity as the lice population grows. In the early stages, the guinea pig may show only mild signs of discomfort, such as slightly increased scratching or occasional restless behavior. These subtle early signs are easy to miss or to dismiss as normal grooming behavior, which is why routine physical checks of your guinea pig's skin and coat are valuable for catching infestations early.
As the infestation progresses, scratching becomes more frequent and more intense. The guinea pig may scratch vigorously at its sides, back, neck, and behind the ears using its hind feet. It may also rub against cage walls, furniture, or accessories in an attempt to relieve the itching. Biting and chewing at the fur, particularly on the flanks and belly where the guinea pig can reach, is another common behavior. This constant irritation causes stress and can make the guinea pig more irritable or less social than usual.
Hair loss is a hallmark sign of a significant lice infestation. The hair loss is caused by a combination of the guinea pig pulling and breaking its own hair through scratching and biting, and the damage caused by the lice themselves. Hair loss often appears first on the back of the neck, behind the ears, and along the back, though it can spread to other areas as the infestation worsens. The exposed skin beneath the thinning coat may appear normal, slightly reddened, or flaky.
One of the distinguishing features of a lice infestation compared to other skin conditions is that the lice themselves, or their eggs, may be visible in the fur. Adult guinea pig lice are small but visible to the naked eye, appearing as tiny elongated insects about one to two millimeters long that move through the fur near the skin surface. They are typically light tan to pale yellow in color. Lice eggs, called nits, are even more commonly seen. They appear as tiny white or off-white oval specks attached firmly to individual hair shafts, usually close to the skin. Unlike dandruff, which flakes off easily, nits are cemented to the hair and resist removal.
In severe infestations that have been left untreated for an extended period, the guinea pig may show more significant signs of distress and declining health. Extensive hair loss may leave large areas of skin exposed. The constant scratching can create open wounds that become infected with bacteria, leading to scabs, crusting, and potentially abscesses. Weight loss may occur as the chronic stress and discomfort reduce the guinea pig's appetite. In very severe cases, particularly in young, elderly, or immunocompromised guinea pigs, the chronic parasitic burden can contribute to overall debilitation.
It is important to distinguish lice infestations from mite infestations, as the two conditions can look similar but require different treatment approaches and have different levels of urgency. Mite infestations, particularly sarcoptic mange, tend to cause more intense itching and more severe symptoms, including seizure-like episodes that lice infestations do not typically produce. Your veterinarian can differentiate between the two through examination and skin testing.
Section 4 Diagnosis
Diagnosing lice in guinea pigs is generally straightforward and often involves visual identification of the parasites or their eggs. During the veterinary examination, the vet will carefully part the guinea pig's fur in several areas, particularly around the neck, behind the ears, and along the back, looking for adult lice moving through the fur and for nits attached to hair shafts. A magnifying glass or otoscope can make the search easier, though adult lice are often visible without magnification.
If lice or nits are not immediately visible on physical examination, the vet may use a technique called tape preparation or the scotch tape test. This involves pressing a piece of clear adhesive tape against the guinea pig's skin and fur to collect any parasites, eggs, or debris, and then examining the tape under a microscope. Skin scrapings may also be performed, particularly if the vet wants to rule out concurrent mite infestation. While lice live on the surface of the skin and are generally identified through the methods described above, mites burrow into the skin and require a scraping that collects deeper skin cells for microscopic examination. Since guinea pigs can have both lice and mites simultaneously, thorough testing for both parasites is good practice.
The vet will also assess the guinea pig's overall health to identify any factors that may have contributed to the infestation or that need to be addressed alongside the parasite treatment. This includes checking the guinea pig's body condition and weight, evaluating the skin for secondary bacterial infections that may have developed from scratching, and discussing the guinea pig's diet, housing, and any recent changes or stressors. If other guinea pigs share the household, the vet will likely recommend examining and treating all of them, as lice spread easily between cagemates.
An exotic vet experienced with guinea pigs will be able to quickly and accurately identify the common guinea pig lice species and differentiate them from other skin conditions with similar presentations. This accuracy is important because the treatment for lice differs from the treatment for fungal infections, allergic conditions, and other causes of itching and hair loss. Starting the right treatment from the beginning saves time, money, and discomfort for your guinea pig.
Section 5 Treatment
Treatment for lice in guinea pigs involves antiparasitic medication administered in a series of treatments to kill both adult lice and any that hatch from eggs after the initial dose. The most commonly used medication is ivermectin, which can be given orally or by injection. A typical treatment protocol involves two to three doses of ivermectin given seven to ten days apart. This interval is designed to target lice at different stages of their life cycle, since ivermectin kills adult lice but does not kill the eggs. By spacing treatments to coincide with the hatching of new lice from existing eggs, each successive dose eliminates the newly hatched generation before they can lay new eggs.
Revolution, also known by its generic name selamectin, is a topical antiparasitic that some veterinarians prefer for treating guinea pig lice. It is applied to the skin on the back of the neck and is absorbed through the skin to provide protection against external parasites. Revolution has the advantage of being easy to apply and providing a sustained level of protection, though it must be dosed correctly for the guinea pig's small body weight. Your vet will prescribe the appropriate product and dose based on your guinea pig's weight and the severity of the infestation.
Environmental treatment is an important complement to treating the guinea pig directly. While lice cannot survive long away from a host, thoroughly cleaning the cage and all accessories when treatment begins helps reduce the chance of reinfestation. Remove and replace all bedding. Wash all fabric items such as fleece liners, hammocks, and cuddle sacks in hot water. Clean hard surfaces and plastic cage components with hot water and a safe disinfectant. Wooden items that cannot be thoroughly cleaned may need to be discarded or isolated during the treatment period.
All guinea pigs in the household should be treated simultaneously, even those that are not showing symptoms. Lice spread so easily through direct contact that if one guinea pig in a group is infested, the others almost certainly are too, even if the parasite load is not yet high enough to cause visible symptoms. Treating all guinea pigs at the same time prevents the untreated animals from serving as a reservoir that reinfests the treated ones.
If secondary bacterial skin infections have developed from scratching, the vet may prescribe topical or oral antibiotics to clear the infection alongside the antiparasitic treatment. Pain relief may be provided if the guinea pig has significant skin damage or appears to be in discomfort. Nutritional support including vitamin C supplementation helps strengthen the immune system during recovery.
Section 6 Homecare
Home care during lice treatment involves administering medications as prescribed, maintaining a scrupulously clean environment, and monitoring your guinea pig's progress. Administer each dose of medication exactly on the schedule your vet prescribes. The timing between doses is specifically designed to break the lice life cycle, and delaying or skipping a dose can allow a new generation of lice to mature and lay eggs, extending the infestation.
During the treatment period, increase the frequency of cage cleaning. Change bedding more often than your normal routine to remove any lice or nits that fall off the guinea pig into the environment. You should see a gradual decrease in the number of visible lice and nits, reduced scratching behavior, and improvement in any areas of hair loss or skin irritation. Part the fur in the areas where you previously saw the most evidence of lice and compare what you see to your observations before treatment began. Support your guinea pig's recovery with good nutrition and a stress-free environment. Provide unlimited timothy hay, a variety of fresh vegetables, daily vitamin C supplementation, and fresh water. A guinea pig with a strong immune system recovers more quickly from parasitic infestation. Keep the environment calm and consistent, avoiding unnecessary stressors during the treatment period. Gentle handling and interaction help maintain your guinea pig's socialization and wellbeing while its skin heals.
Section 7 Prevention
Quarantining new guinea pigs is the single most effective step you can take to prevent lice from entering your household. Any new guinea pig, regardless of its source, should be kept in a separate cage in a separate room from your existing guinea pigs for at least two to three weeks. During this quarantine period, observe the new guinea pig closely for any signs of scratching, hair loss, or visible parasites. Having the new guinea pig examined by an exotic vet during the quarantine period adds another layer of protection, as the vet can check for lice and other parasites that might not be causing visible symptoms yet.
Maintaining good hygiene in your guinea pig's living environment reduces the risk of parasitic problems in general. Regular cage cleaning, appropriate bedding, and a dry, well-ventilated space create conditions that are less favorable for parasites. While lice require a host guinea pig to survive, a clean environment supports the overall health and immune function that helps guinea pigs resist infestation even when exposed to small numbers of parasites.
Proper nutrition supports a strong immune system that is the guinea pig's best natural defense against lice and other parasites. Ensure daily vitamin C intake through fresh vegetables and supplements, provide unlimited timothy hay for digestive and overall health, and feed measured portions of quality pellets. A well-nourished guinea pig with a robust immune system is better equipped to keep incidental lice exposure from developing into a full-blown infestation.
Avoid sharing supplies between guinea pig groups without thorough cleaning. If you have multiple groups of guinea pigs housed separately, each group should have its own set of grooming tools, food bowls, water bottles, and enrichment items. If items must be shared, clean them thoroughly between uses. When visiting other guinea pig owners or attending guinea pig events, wash your hands and change your clothes before handling your own guinea pigs to reduce the risk of carrying parasites home.
Regular hands-on health checks give you the best chance of catching a lice infestation early, before it becomes established and spreads to all of your guinea pigs. During your regular handling and bonding time, part the fur in several areas and look for any signs of parasites, nits, or skin changes. Pay special attention to behind the ears, the back of the neck, and along the rump, as these are common sites where lice concentrate. Early detection means simpler treatment and less discomfort for your guinea pig.
Section 8 Prognosis
The prognosis for guinea pigs with lice infestations is excellent. Lice are among the most treatable parasitic conditions in guinea pig medicine, and with proper antiparasitic medication and environmental cleaning, the infestation can be completely eliminated. Most guinea pigs show noticeable improvement in scratching and comfort within the first week of treatment, and the infestation is typically fully resolved within three to four weeks when the treatment protocol is followed completely.
Hair regrowth in areas that experienced hair loss during the infestation typically begins within two to four weeks after the lice have been eliminated and continues over the following weeks. The speed and completeness of hair regrowth depends on the severity of the hair loss and whether any permanent damage was done to the hair follicles by intense scratching or secondary infection. In most cases, the coat returns to its normal appearance within one to three months.
Secondary skin infections that developed from scratching during the infestation also respond well to treatment. Antibiotics clear the bacterial infection, and as the skin heals, the scabs and irritation resolve. In the rare case where scratching caused more significant skin damage, healing may take longer but is still expected to be complete in most cases.
The main risk to the long-term outlook is reinfestation. Guinea pigs that have been successfully treated for lice can become infested again if they are exposed to the parasites through contact with infested guinea pigs, contaminated supplies, or new additions to the household that carry lice. Following the prevention measures discussed earlier, particularly quarantining new guinea pigs and maintaining regular health checks, significantly reduces this risk. There is no lasting immunity to lice after an infestation, so the same preventive vigilance is needed indefinitely.
