Advanced kidney disease carries a more serious prognosis. When kidney function has declined to the point where the guinea pig is severely symptomatic despite aggressive management, the options become more limited. Intensive fluid therapy and supportive care can sometimes stabilize a guinea pig temporarily, but when the kidneys can no longer maintain the body's basic chemical balance, quality of life deteriorates. At this stage, honest conversations with your vet about comfort care and quality of life assessment become particularly important.

Throughout the course of kidney disease, quality of life should be the guiding principle for decision-making. A guinea pig that is eating, interacting, and showing interest in its surroundings is generally maintaining an acceptable quality of life even with kidney disease.
