This condition is more common than many owners realize, particularly during colder months or in homes where temperatures fluctuate significantly. Guinea pigs that are housed in garages, sheds, outdoor hutches, or near drafty windows are at the highest risk. However, hypothermia can also occur indoors if the ambient temperature drops below about 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius) for an extended period. Young guinea pigs, elderly guinea pigs, and those who are already sick or underweight are especially vulnerable because their bodies have fewer reserves to generate and maintain warmth.

The reason guinea pigs are so susceptible to hypothermia comes down to their biology. They originated in the mild climates of South America, where temperatures remain relatively stable year-round. Their bodies evolved for moderate conditions, not cold weather. They lack the thick fat reserves of some other rodents, and while their fur provides some insulation, it is not nearly enough to protect them from genuinely cold environments. When their core temperature begins to fall, their metabolism slows down, their organs begin to function less efficiently, and if the decline continues unchecked, organ failure and death can follow.

Recognizing hypothermia early is critical because the condition progresses quickly in an animal this small. A guinea pig that feels cold to the touch, is unusually still, or seems unresponsive needs immediate warming and veterinary attention. The good news is that with fast action, many guinea pigs can recover fully from mild to moderate hypothermia. However, severe cases where the body temperature has dropped significantly carry a much higher risk of complications and death, making prevention the best strategy by far.

Section 2 Causes

The most straightforward cause of hypothermia in guinea pigs is exposure to cold temperatures. This can happen in a number of ways, and understanding the specific circumstances helps owners prevent it from occurring. The most common scenario involves guinea pigs housed in areas that are not temperature-controlled. Garages, sheds, basements, and outdoor hutches can all drop to dangerous temperatures during the night or during cold weather, even if they seem reasonably comfortable during the day. Temperature swings of 15 to 20 degrees between day and night are not unusual in these settings, and those nighttime lows can push a guinea pig into hypothermia territory.

Indoor guinea pigs can also be affected if they are placed near drafty windows, exterior walls, or air conditioning vents. Even a consistent draft of cool air blowing across a cage can gradually lower a guinea pig's body temperature over several hours. Floors tend to be colder than the rest of a room, especially tile and hardwood, so cages placed directly on the floor without insulation beneath them expose guinea pigs to colder conditions than the room thermostat might suggest.

Wet conditions dramatically increase the risk of hypothermia. A guinea pig that has been bathed and not dried thoroughly, or one whose bedding has become soaked with water from a leaking bottle or spilled bowl, can lose body heat rapidly through evaporation. Wet fur loses almost all of its insulating properties, and the evaporation of water from the coat actively pulls heat away from the body. This is why bathing guinea pigs should always be done in a warm room with immediate and thorough towel drying followed by gentle low-heat blow drying if the guinea pig tolerates it.

Illness is another major contributing factor. Guinea pigs that are already sick, particularly those with respiratory infections, gastrointestinal stasis, or any condition that reduces their appetite, are at significantly higher risk. When a guinea pig stops eating, its body loses the metabolic fuel it needs to generate heat. A sick guinea pig that is also lethargic will move around less, which further reduces heat production. This creates a dangerous cycle where illness leads to reduced eating and activity, which leads to dropping body temperature, which further suppresses appetite and energy, accelerating the decline.

Age plays an important role as well. Very young guinea pigs, particularly those under a week old, have immature temperature regulation systems and can become hypothermic very quickly if separated from their mother or siblings. On the other end of the spectrum, elderly guinea pigs often have less body fat, reduced muscle mass, and slower metabolisms, all of which make them less able to maintain their core temperature when conditions become even slightly cool. Guinea pigs recovering from surgery are also at elevated risk because anesthesia disrupts the body's temperature regulation mechanisms, and the stress of surgery reduces the body's ability to generate heat efficiently in the hours and days following the procedure.

Stress itself can be an indirect cause. A guinea pig that is stressed from a new environment, the loss of a cagemate, or other disruptions may eat less and become less active, both of which reduce heat production. Combined with even a modest drop in ambient temperature, this can tip a vulnerable guinea pig into hypothermia.

Section 3 Symptoms

The early signs of hypothermia in guinea pigs can be subtle, which is why it is so important for owners to know what to look for. The first thing most people notice is that their guinea pig feels cold to the touch, particularly on the ears, feet, and nose. These extremities lose heat first as the body redirects blood flow to protect the vital organs in the core. If you pick up your guinea pig and its body feels noticeably cooler than usual against your hands or chest, that is an immediate red flag.

Behavioral changes often accompany the physical signs. A hypothermic guinea pig will typically become very still and quiet. It may huddle in one spot, often in a corner or under a hiding place, and resist moving even when encouraged. This lethargy is the body's attempt to conserve energy and reduce heat loss by minimizing movement. You may also notice that your guinea pig is not eating or drinking, which is always a concerning sign in guinea pigs regardless of the cause. A guinea pig that ignores its favorite treats or fresh vegetables is telling you something is wrong.

As hypothermia progresses, the symptoms become more pronounced and more alarming. The guinea pig's body may feel stiff, and its movements, if it moves at all, may appear slow and uncoordinated. Shivering may or may not be present. While shivering is the body's natural response to cold as muscles contract rapidly to generate heat, severely hypothermic guinea pigs may stop shivering altogether because their body no longer has the energy to sustain it. The absence of shivering in a cold guinea pig is actually a worse sign than shivering, because it suggests the body's warming mechanisms have been overwhelmed.

The guinea pig's breathing may become slow and shallow. You might have to watch closely to see the chest moving at all. The heart rate will also slow down, though this is difficult for most owners to detect without a stethoscope. The gums and tongue may appear pale or bluish rather than their normal healthy pink, indicating that blood circulation is being compromised. The eyes may appear dull or half-closed, and the guinea pig may not respond to your voice or touch the way it normally would.

In severe cases, the guinea pig may become completely unresponsive, lying on its side with little to no visible movement. At this stage, it can be difficult to tell whether the guinea pig is still alive without very careful observation. Even at this point, emergency warming and veterinary care can sometimes save the animal, so it is critical not to assume the worst. Guinea pigs in severe hypothermia can appear dead while still having faint vital signs. If there is any doubt at all, begin warming procedures immediately and get to a veterinarian as fast as possible.

Section 4 Diagnosis

Diagnosing hypothermia in guinea pigs is primarily based on measuring the body's core temperature and assessing the animal's clinical signs. When you bring a cold and lethargic guinea pig to the veterinarian, the first thing they will do is take a rectal temperature using a small digital thermometer. This gives an accurate reading of the core body temperature. A normal guinea pig temperature falls between 99 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit. A reading below 99 degrees confirms hypothermia, and the further below that number the temperature has fallen, the more serious the situation.

The veterinarian will classify the hypothermia as mild, moderate, or severe based on the temperature reading and the guinea pig's clinical presentation. Mild hypothermia, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s Fahrenheit, typically presents with cold extremities, reduced activity, and decreased appetite but the guinea pig is still conscious and somewhat responsive. Moderate hypothermia, with temperatures in the low 90s, usually involves significant lethargy, muscle stiffness, and minimal responsiveness. Severe hypothermia, with temperatures below about 90 degrees Fahrenheit, is a critical emergency where the guinea pig may be unresponsive and barely showing signs of life.

Beyond confirming the hypothermia itself, the veterinarian will work to determine whether there is an underlying cause that triggered or contributed to the temperature drop. This is especially important if the guinea pig's living environment does not obviously explain the hypothermia. The vet may perform a physical examination looking for signs of illness such as respiratory infection, dental disease, gastrointestinal problems, or other conditions that could have caused the guinea pig to stop eating and become vulnerable to cold. Blood work may be recommended to check organ function, blood sugar levels, and overall metabolic status. Low blood sugar is common in hypothermic guinea pigs because the body burns through its glucose reserves trying to maintain temperature.

This is a situation where seeing an exotic veterinarian, one who has specific experience and training with guinea pigs, makes a real difference. Guinea pigs have unique physiology, and their normal ranges for temperature, heart rate, and blood values differ from cats, dogs, and even other rodents. A vet who regularly treats guinea pigs will be better equipped to assess the severity accurately, identify contributing illnesses, and provide appropriate treatment without the delays that can come from a general practice vet needing to look up guinea pig-specific information during an emergency.

Section 5 Treatment

Treatment for hypothermia in guinea pigs focuses on two immediate priorities: safely raising the body temperature and supporting the body's systems while they recover. The approach depends on the severity of the hypothermia, but in all cases, the warming process must be gradual. Warming a hypothermic guinea pig too quickly can cause dangerous shifts in blood pressure and heart rhythm, so controlled, steady warming is essential.

For mild cases, the veterinarian may wrap the guinea pig in warm towels or blankets, sometimes warmed in a dryer or with a heating pad set to low. Warm water bottles wrapped in cloth may be placed near but not directly against the guinea pig to provide gentle ambient heat. The guinea pig will be kept in a warm, quiet environment and monitored as its temperature gradually rises. Offering warm, not hot, fluids by syringe can help warm the body from the inside while also addressing dehydration.

Moderate to severe hypothermia requires more intensive intervention. The veterinarian may administer warmed subcutaneous or intravenous fluids to help raise the core temperature from within. This is one of the most effective methods for treating significant hypothermia because it warms the blood and organs directly rather than relying on external heat to penetrate through the fur and skin. Supplemental oxygen may be provided if the guinea pig's breathing is compromised. Pain management may also be necessary, as the process of rewarming can be uncomfortable.

Blood sugar support is often a critical component of treatment. Hypothermic guinea pigs frequently have dangerously low blood glucose levels, and the vet may administer glucose solutions to prevent or treat hypoglycemia. If the guinea pig has not been eating, critical care feeding with a syringe-fed recovery formula will be started once the body temperature is stable enough for the digestive system to function. The vet will also begin treating any underlying illness that may have contributed to the hypothermia, whether that means antibiotics for an infection, dental treatment, or other targeted therapies.

Following initial stabilization, the guinea pig may need to remain at the veterinary clinic for observation, particularly in moderate to severe cases. The vet will monitor the temperature closely to ensure it continues to rise and stabilizes within the normal range without dropping again. Heart rate, breathing, and responsiveness will all be tracked as indicators of recovery.

Section 6 Homecare

Once your guinea pig is stable enough to come home from the vet, or if you are managing a mild case of hypothermia at home under veterinary guidance, creating a warm and supportive environment is your top priority. Set up a recovery area in the warmest room of your house, away from any drafts, windows, or exterior walls. The ambient temperature in the room should ideally be between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit. A small space heater can help maintain consistent warmth, but make sure it is positioned safely away from the cage and never pointed directly at the guinea pig.

Provide extra bedding for insulation. Fleece liners layered over soft towels work well because they wick moisture away while providing warmth. You can place a heating pad designed for small animals under one section of the cage, making sure the guinea pig can move away from it if it gets too warm. Never use a human heating pad, as these can overheat and cause burns. Warm water bottles wrapped in a towel can also be placed in the cage but should be checked frequently and replaced as they cool.

Getting your guinea pig eating again is critical for recovery. A guinea pig that is eating generates metabolic heat, which helps maintain body temperature from within. Offer fresh hay, favorite vegetables, and vitamin C-rich foods. If your guinea pig is reluctant to eat on its own, syringe feeding with a critical care formula may be necessary. Your vet will show you how to do this and tell you how much and how often to feed. Warm the formula slightly to make it more appealing and to provide a small amount of internal warming.

Monitor your guinea pig closely during recovery. Check its body temperature by feeling the ears and feet regularly, and watch for signs of improvement such as increased activity, willingness to eat, and normal responses to your presence. If your guinea pig's condition does not improve within the timeframe your vet specified, or if it seems to be getting worse, contact your vet immediately.

Section 7 Prevention

Preventing hypothermia is far easier and safer than treating it, and it comes down to maintaining a consistently warm and stable environment for your guinea pig. The single most important step is keeping your guinea pig's living space at an appropriate temperature. Guinea pigs do best in environments between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 24 degrees Celsius), with the ideal range being around 68 to 72 degrees. Temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit are dangerous, and anything below 50 degrees can be life-threatening, especially with prolonged exposure.

If you live in a climate with cold winters, housing your guinea pig indoors is strongly recommended. Outdoor hutches and garden sheds simply cannot provide the stable warmth that guinea pigs need during cold months. Even in temperate climates, nighttime temperature drops can be significant enough to put outdoor guinea pigs at risk. If indoor housing is truly not possible, the outdoor enclosure must be heavily insulated, windproofed, and equipped with safe heating sources, but this is always a compromise and never as safe as indoor housing.

Indoors, pay attention to where the cage is positioned. Avoid placing it on cold floors without insulation underneath. Avoid locations near exterior doors, single-pane windows, or air conditioning vents. Rooms that tend to be drafty or that cool down significantly when the heating system cycles off are poor choices for guinea pig housing. If your home gets cold at night, consider a small ceramic heat emitter or a thermostatically controlled space heater in the guinea pig room to maintain a stable overnight temperature.

Proper bedding provides an important layer of insulation. Thick fleece liners, paper-based bedding, or hay bedding all help guinea pigs retain body heat. Providing enclosed hiding places such as fleece tunnels, snuggle sacks, or wooden houses with soft bedding inside gives guinea pigs a warm retreat where their body heat is contained in a smaller space. During cold weather, extra bedding and additional hiding spots are simple but effective measures.

Keeping your guinea pig healthy through proper nutrition, regular vitamin C supplementation, and routine veterinary checkups also helps prevent hypothermia indirectly. A well-nourished guinea pig with a healthy weight and no underlying illnesses is far better equipped to regulate its body temperature than one that is underweight, malnourished, or fighting an infection. Monitoring your guinea pig daily for signs of illness and addressing health problems early means they are less likely to reach the weakened state where hypothermia becomes a risk.

Section 8 Prognosis

The prognosis for hypothermia in guinea pigs depends heavily on how severe the temperature drop was, how long the guinea pig was hypothermic before treatment began, and whether there are underlying health conditions complicating the recovery. Mild hypothermia that is caught early and treated promptly generally carries a good prognosis. Most guinea pigs with mild hypothermia recover fully within 24 to 48 hours with appropriate warming and supportive care, and there are usually no lasting effects once the body temperature returns to normal.

Moderate hypothermia has a more guarded prognosis. Recovery is still very possible, but it takes longer and there is a higher risk of complications. Guinea pigs recovering from moderate hypothermia may take several days to return to normal eating and activity levels. During this recovery period, they remain vulnerable to secondary problems such as respiratory infections, gastrointestinal stasis, or a recurrence of hypothermia if the environmental conditions are not corrected. Close monitoring during the recovery period is essential, and follow-up veterinary visits may be needed to ensure everything is progressing well.

Severe hypothermia carries the most serious prognosis, and survival is not guaranteed even with aggressive veterinary treatment. When the body temperature drops very low, organs can sustain damage that may not be immediately apparent. The kidneys, liver, and heart are particularly vulnerable. Some guinea pigs that survive severe hypothermia may develop ongoing health issues related to organ damage, while others make surprisingly complete recoveries. The outcome often depends on the individual guinea pig's overall health before the incident and the speed and quality of the veterinary care they receive.

The most important factor in the long-term outlook is addressing whatever caused the hypothermia in the first place. If the guinea pig became hypothermic because of environmental conditions, those conditions must be corrected permanently before the guinea pig returns to its normal living space. If an underlying illness contributed to the hypothermia, that illness needs to be fully treated and managed. Guinea pigs that experience one episode of hypothermia may be more vulnerable to future episodes, particularly if they are elderly or have chronic health conditions, so ongoing vigilance about environmental temperature and overall health is important. With proper prevention measures in place, there is no reason a guinea pig that has recovered from hypothermia cannot go on to live a full and comfortable life.
