More specialized tests are available when initial testing does not provide answers or when specific pathogens are suspected. Fecal culture grows bacteria from the sample to identify specific species, which is helpful when pathogenic bacteria like Clostridium or Salmonella are suspected. PCR testing detects genetic material from specific parasites or bacteria and is highly sensitive, capable of finding organisms that might be missed by microscopic examination. Collecting a fecal sample at home for your vet is simple once you know the process. Use a clean plastic bag, small container with a lid, or specimen cup. Pick up several fresh droppings using the bag turned inside out on your hand, a clean spoon, or similar tool.
