Section 1 Overview

The single most common housing problem for guinea pigs is that commercially available cages are too small. Walk into any pet store and look at what is marketed as a guinea pig cage, and you will find enclosures that might be adequate for a hamster but fall far short of what a guinea pig needs. A typical pet store cage measures around four to six square feet of floor space. The minimum recommended space for a single guinea pig is 7.5 square feet, and for a pair it is 10.5 square feet. Most commercial cages do not come close to meeting even the single-pig minimum, and the ones that do are often prohibitively expensive.

This is the fundamental reason so many guinea pig owners end up building their own cages. It is not about craftsmanship as a hobby or a desire to save money, though both of those can be factors. It is about the straightforward reality that the pet industry does not manufacture appropriately sized housing for guinea pigs at a reasonable price point. When you build your own cage, you decide the dimensions, and that means you can actually give your pigs the space they need.

The most popular DIY approach is the C&C cage, which stands for cubes and coroplast. This method uses wire storage cube grids as walls and corrugated plastic sheeting as the base. It has become the standard recommendation in the guinea pig community because it is inexpensive, endlessly customizable, easy to clean, and requires no special tools or construction skills. A complete C&C cage for two guinea pigs can be built in under an hour for roughly thirty to fifty dollars in materials, compared to one hundred fifty dollars or more for a commercial cage that provides less space.

Other DIY approaches exist as well, including wooden frame cages, converted furniture pieces like bookshelves laid on their backs, and large plastic storage bins modified with ventilation. Each has trade-offs in terms of cost, durability, ease of cleaning, and aesthetics. The best choice depends on your living situation, your budget, and how much effort you want to invest in the build.

Section 2 Requirements

Before you start building, you need to establish your size requirements. These are not suggestions or nice-to-have targets. They represent the minimum space your guinea pig needs to maintain physical health and psychological well-being. Guinea pigs that are housed in inadequate space develop a range of problems including obesity from insufficient exercise, depression and lethargy, barbering where they chew their own or their cage mate's fur, increased aggression between pairs, and bumblefoot from standing in one position on soiled bedding for too long.

For one guinea pig, the minimum floor space is 7.5 square feet. For two guinea pigs, the minimum is 10.5 square feet. For three, aim for at least 13 square feet. These numbers come from widely accepted guinea pig welfare guidelines and represent the floor area needed for the animals to move, eat, rest, and interact without constant competition for space. Bigger is always better. No guinea pig has ever suffered from having too much room.

For a C&C cage, the standard grid panel is approximately 14 inches square. A two-by-four grid cage, which is the minimum recommended size for a pair, provides roughly 10.5 square feet of floor space. A two-by-five grid cage gives about 13 square feet and is better for pairs, especially boar pairs that need more personal space. The grid panels are sold in sets at most home goods stores and are marketed as modular wire storage cubes. Look for grids with nine-by-nine hole patterns. Avoid grids with wider spacing, as guinea pig heads can get stuck in larger openings.

Coroplast, the corrugated plastic used for the base, is available at sign shops, home improvement stores, and online suppliers. You need a single sheet large enough to cover the cage footprint plus six-inch sides that fold up to contain bedding. For a two-by-four cage, a sheet measuring roughly 56 by 56 inches works when you account for the folded edges. Coroplast is lightweight, waterproof, and easy to cut with a utility knife and straightedge. Score the fold lines rather than cutting through, and the material bends cleanly into a tray shape.

You will also need cable ties or the plastic connectors that come with storage cube sets to join the grid panels together. Cable ties are generally stronger and more secure. Plan for at least three ties per grid-to-grid connection. A pair of scissors or wire cutters to trim the cable tie tails, a measuring tape, a marker, and a utility knife round out the tool list. No power tools, no lumber, no hardware store trips beyond what you may already have at home.

If you are building a wooden cage instead of a C&C design, the material list changes but the space requirements remain identical. Use untreated wood only, as pressure-treated lumber contains chemicals that are harmful to guinea pigs. The interior surfaces that the pigs will contact must be sealed with a pet-safe waterproof coating to prevent urine absorption into the grain. Wire mesh for ventilation panels should have openings no larger than one inch by one inch.

Section 3 Setup Guidelines

Building a C&C cage is genuinely straightforward, and the process from opening the materials to placing your guinea pig inside typically takes less than an hour. Start by laying out the grid panels on the floor in the configuration you want. For a standard two-by-four cage, arrange eight panels in a rectangle, four along the length and two along the width. Stand each panel upright and connect adjacent panels with cable ties at the top, middle, and bottom. Pull the cable ties tight and trim the excess so there are no protruding ends that could scratch your pig.

Once the walls are assembled, build the coroplast base tray. Lay your coroplast sheet flat and measure the interior dimensions of your grid rectangle. Mark the base area in the center of the sheet, then measure outward six inches on each side. These outer sections will fold up to form the tray walls. Score along the fold lines using your utility knife, pressing just hard enough to cut through the top layer of the corrugated plastic without going all the way through. Fold the sides up along the score lines. At each corner, you will have overlapping flaps. Fold one flap inside and secure it to the side wall with packing tape or a small cable tie. This creates a waterproof tray with no gaps in the corners.

Slide the completed coroplast tray into the bottom of the grid enclosure. It should fit snugly inside the walls. If the tray is slightly too large, you can trim the side walls down. If it is too small, the gaps along the edges will allow bedding to escape. Taking accurate measurements before cutting prevents most fitting issues.

Now set up the interior. Place a hay rack or hay area at one end. Position water bottles on the grid walls at a height where the spout is roughly three to four inches from the floor, which is comfortable drinking height for most guinea pigs. Place a heavy ceramic food bowl for pellets in an accessible location away from the hay area to minimize contamination. Add at least one hiding space per pig. These can be wooden houses, fabric hidey huts, or simple fleece draped over a bent grid panel. Make sure each pig has its own retreat space so neither feels the need to compete for the single available shelter.

Add bedding last. If using fleece, lay a fitted fleece liner over the coroplast base, with an absorbent layer of towels or puppy pads underneath. If using disposable bedding, spread a layer of paper-based bedding one to two inches deep across the entire base. The cage is now ready for your guinea pigs.

For placement, set the cage on a flat, stable surface in a room where the temperature stays between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid direct sunlight, drafts from windows or vents, and proximity to loud electronics like televisions or stereo speakers. A table or stand that raises the cage to waist height makes cleaning easier and puts the pigs at a comfortable interaction level, but a floor placement works fine as long as you can protect the pigs from other household pets.

Section 4 Common Mistakes

The most damaging mistake in DIY cage building is making the cage too small. It sounds obvious given everything already discussed about size requirements, but it happens constantly. Owners see a two-by-three grid layout on a website, think it looks like plenty of space from the photograph, and build it without doing the math. A two-by-three C&C cage provides about 7.5 square feet, which is the bare minimum for a single pig and not enough for a pair. If you have two guinea pigs, start at two-by-four and go bigger if possible. The extra grids and coroplast cost very little more.

Using the wrong type of grid panels is a safety hazard. Some storage cube sets come with decorative grids that have wider spacing between the wires, sometimes as wide as two inches. A guinea pig, particularly a young one, can push its head through these gaps and become trapped. This can cause panic, injury, and potentially strangulation. Always count the grid squares before purchasing. Nine holes across by nine holes down is the standard safe pattern.

Building a multi-level cage with ramps sounds appealing because it seems to add usable space. However, multi-level setups come with real drawbacks for guinea pigs. Ramps must be wide enough for the pig to turn around on, not just walk up. They need high sides to prevent falls. The angle cannot be too steep. And even with a well-built ramp, some guinea pigs simply refuse to use upper levels, which means you invested time and materials in space that goes unused. If you want to add a small loft for a kitchen area or hay station, that can work, but do not count the upper level toward your minimum floor space calculation. The ground level alone must meet the size requirement.

Neglecting ventilation happens most often with wooden box-style cages and converted furniture. A solid-walled enclosure without adequate airflow traps ammonia from urine, humidity from water bottles, and heat from the pigs' bodies. Guinea pigs are sensitive to respiratory irritation, and poor ventilation is a direct path to upper respiratory infections. At least two sides of any enclosure should have mesh or grid panels that allow free air circulation.

Forgetting to secure the cage against other household pets is a critical oversight. A C&C cage with no top is an open invitation for a cat or dog. If you have other animals in the house, you must add a grid panel lid secured with cable ties. The lid should be hinged on one side or easily removable for cleaning access but not easily knocked off by a curious cat.

Section 5 Maintenance And Cleaning

DIY cages require the same cleaning routine as any guinea pig enclosure, but their construction offers some distinct advantages during maintenance. C&C cages are modular by nature, which means you can detach a section of wall to make bedding changes easier, remove the entire coroplast tray for washing, and reconfigure the layout if your needs change over time.

Daily maintenance involves spot cleaning the bedding to remove droppings and wet patches, refreshing hay, cleaning and refilling water bottles, and wiping down any food bowls. With a C&C cage, many owners detach one wall section or fold it inward to reach the interior more easily rather than leaning over the top.

Weekly, strip all bedding and wash the coroplast tray with warm water and a mild dish soap or vinegar solution. The smooth surface of coroplast cleans easily and dries quickly. Check the cable ties during weekly cleaning. Over time, guinea pigs may chew on ties that are within reach, weakening them. Replace any ties that show teeth marks or loosening. Also inspect the grid panels for stability and make sure no connections have come apart.

Coroplast trays have a limited lifespan. Even though the material is waterproof, urine can seep into the corrugated channels at cut edges or through scratches in the surface. Over time, this causes persistent odor that no amount of cleaning eliminates. Plan to replace the coroplast base every six to twelve months, depending on how heavily it is used and how diligent you are about protecting cut edges with tape.

Fleece liners used in C&C cages need regular laundering. Shake out loose hay and droppings before washing, then launder in hot water with unscented detergent and no fabric softener. Fabric softener coats the fleece fibers and destroys the wicking ability that makes fleece bedding work. Most fleece liners hold up well through dozens of wash cycles before they need replacement.

If you built a wooden cage, cleaning is more labor-intensive because wood absorbs moisture and odor. Sealed surfaces help, but the sealant wears down over time and needs reapplication. During cleaning, inspect the sealant for chips or peeling and reseal as necessary. Wooden components that develop a persistent urine smell despite cleaning and resealing should be replaced.

Section 6 Special Considerations

Renters need to consider whether a DIY cage complies with their lease terms and whether it can be built without modifications to the rental unit. C&C cages are freestanding and require no wall mounting, drilling, or permanent alterations, which makes them ideal for rental situations. Wooden cages are also freestanding but take up more visual space and may be harder to move during inspections or when relocating.

Apartment dwellers with limited floor space can build L-shaped or T-shaped C&C configurations that tuck into corners or wrap around furniture. The modular grid system accommodates almost any shape, so you are not limited to rectangles. Just make sure the total floor area meets the minimum requirements regardless of the configuration.

For households with young children, cage height and security deserve extra attention. Small children may lean on the cage walls, push grid panels inward, or reach in and handle guinea pigs without supervision. Build the walls at least two grids high, which is approximately 28 inches, and secure a lid on top. Consider placing the cage on a table or raised platform that puts it above the reach of toddlers.

Climate plays a role in material selection. In humid environments, wooden cages are more prone to mold and moisture damage. Coroplast and wire grids are moisture-resistant and dry quickly, making C&C cages the better choice for high-humidity regions. In very cold climates, a cage placed on a cold floor benefits from a layer of insulation underneath the coroplast, such as a piece of foam board or a thick towel, to prevent the floor from chilling the cage base.

If you plan to expand your herd in the future, design your initial cage with expansion in mind. One advantage of C&C construction is that you can add grid panels to an existing cage without starting over. Build your initial cage against a wall with one short side accessible, and you can later remove that end wall and extend the cage by adding more grids and a larger coroplast tray. Planning for growth from the beginning saves you from rebuilding entirely when a second or third pig joins the family.
