Be extremely cautious about antibiotics. Never give your guinea pig any medication, including antibiotics, without veterinary guidance from an exotic animal vet. Many common antibiotics are lethal to guinea pigs. If your guinea pig is prescribed an antibiotic for any condition, make sure the prescribing vet is experienced with guinea pig medicine and is aware of the antibiotic restrictions. Minimize stress through consistent routines, appropriate housing, and compatible companionship. Guinea pigs thrive with predictability, so maintain consistent feeding times, keep the cage in a stable location, and avoid unnecessary disruptions. Provide adequate space, hiding spots, and social companionship, as loneliness is a significant stressor.
Practice good hygiene in food preparation and cage maintenance. Wash vegetables before offering them, keep water bottles clean and filled with fresh water, and maintain a regular cage cleaning schedule. Store hay and pellets properly to prevent mold and contamination. Quarantine new guinea pigs before introducing them to existing pets to prevent potential transmission of infectious organisms.
Support immune health through adequate vitamin C supplementation. Guinea pigs receiving 25 to 50 milligrams of vitamin C daily have stronger immune and digestive defenses than those with insufficient intake.
