When a bright light is directed at the eye from a distance, the reflection from a sclerotic lens appears as a dim glow deep within the eye while the area around the lens remains transparent. A true cataract blocks the light more completely and does not allow visualization of structures behind the lens. Your vet uses retroillumination techniques to make this distinction.

Checking for complications is essential. The vet will assess intraocular pressure to screen for glaucoma, which can develop secondary to lens swelling or inflammation. If diabetes is identified as the cause, managing blood sugar levels is the primary treatment focus. Dietary modification to reduce simple sugars and carefully managed insulin therapy, if necessary, can help control blood glucose. In some cases, improving blood sugar control may slow or prevent further cataract progression, though existing lens changes typically do not reverse.

Environmental management is a practical and important aspect of cataract treatment. Keeping the cage layout consistent helps your guinea pig navigate using spatial memory. Avoid rearranging cage furniture, food stations, and water sources once your guinea pig has become accustomed to their positions. If changes must be made, introduce them gradually and guide your guinea pig through the new arrangement.

Enhancing other sensory cues supports navigation. Speaking to your guinea pig before approaching helps prevent startle. Placing food in consistent locations allows your guinea pig to find meals reliably. Ensuring cage mates are present provides social cues that help with orientation and activity.

Vitamin C supplementation should be maintained at recommended levels, as the antioxidant properties of vitamin C may help slow lens degeneration. While vitamin C cannot reverse an existing cataract, supporting overall eye health is a reasonable and beneficial practice.

Avoid feeding excessive sugary treats or foods that could contribute to blood sugar instability, as elevated blood glucose is a risk factor for cataract development.

Protect the eyes from injury. Monitor for signs of diabetes. Bilateral cataracts reduce vision in both eyes and have more noticeable effects on the guinea pig's behavior and navigation. However, even with significant bilateral cataracts, most guinea pigs adapt well in a familiar, stable environment. Their reliance on smell, hearing, and whisker contact allows them to maintain a good quality of life. Guinea pigs with blind cage mates as social companions provide additional navigational cues that help.

Complications from cataracts, including lens-induced uveitis and secondary glaucoma, carry a more guarded prognosis because they can cause pain and additional vision loss. Regular veterinary monitoring helps catch these complications early when they are most treatable. With appropriate medical management, most complications can be controlled effectively.
