While this sounds extreme, guinea pigs adapt remarkably well to life on three legs and typically return to near-normal activity levels within a few weeks of surgery. Complications that can affect prognosis include infection, which is more likely in open fractures or after surgical repair, delayed healing or non-union where the bone fails to heal properly, and malunion where the bone heals in an abnormal position. These complications are less common with appropriate treatment and monitoring but may require additional intervention if they occur.
Fractures caused by underlying bone disease have a more complex prognosis because the bone weakness that caused the initial fracture can lead to additional fractures and may be progressive. Guinea pigs typically return to their normal activity levels and show no lasting effects from the injury, provided healing was uncomplicated.
