Bordetella causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections in guinea pigs, starting with inflammation of the nasal passages and throat and potentially progressing to bronchitis and pneumonia. The speed at which the infection can progress is what makes it so dangerous. A guinea pig who seems to have a mild cold one day can be critically ill the next, which is why any sign of respiratory illness in a guinea pig should be treated as urgent.

This bacterium is highly contagious and can spread between guinea pigs through direct contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated surfaces. What makes Bordetella particularly tricky is that it can also be carried and transmitted by other animals, most notably rabbits and dogs, who may show few or no symptoms themselves while being a source of infection for your guinea pigs. This cross-species transmission is one of the main reasons exotic vets advise against housing guinea pigs and rabbits together.

The good news is that Bordetella infections are treatable with antibiotics when caught early, and there are concrete steps you can take to significantly reduce your guinea pig's risk of exposure. Understanding how this infection spreads, recognizing the symptoms quickly, and seeking immediate veterinary care are the keys to protecting your guinea pig from one of their most serious bacterial threats.

Section 2 Causes

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a gram-negative bacterium that has a particular affinity for the respiratory tract. It attaches to the cilia, the tiny hair-like structures that line the airways and help move mucus and debris out of the lungs. Once attached, the bacteria damage these cilia and produce toxins that further impair the respiratory system's natural defenses. This damage makes it easier for the infection to spread deeper into the lungs and also opens the door for secondary bacterial infections to take hold.

Direct contact with infected animals is the primary route of transmission. Guinea pigs housed together can spread the infection rapidly through the group, and an outbreak in a multi-guinea-pig household can affect every animal before the first one even shows clear symptoms. The bacteria are shed in respiratory secretions, so close contact such as sharing food dishes, water bottles, and living space creates ideal conditions for transmission.

Cross-species transmission is a critically important cause that many guinea pig owners do not realize. Rabbits are one of the most common carriers of Bordetella bronchiseptica. Many rabbits carry the bacteria in their respiratory tract without ever becoming sick, making them silent sources of infection. Dogs can also carry and transmit Bordetella, and the kennel cough vaccine given to dogs targets the same organism. This is why housing guinea pigs and rabbits together, a practice that was once commonly recommended, is now strongly discouraged by exotic veterinarians.

Environmental factors play a significant role in whether exposure leads to illness. Guinea pigs kept in poorly ventilated spaces are at higher risk because stagnant air allows bacterial particles to concentrate. High ammonia levels from urine-soaked bedding damage the respiratory lining and make guinea pigs more susceptible to infection. Drafty conditions, temperature fluctuations, and damp environments also stress the respiratory system and reduce its ability to fight off pathogens.

Stress is a major contributing factor because it suppresses the immune system and makes guinea pigs more vulnerable to infections they might otherwise resist. Common stressors include overcrowding, recent transport or rehoming, loss of a companion, loud environments, and improper handling. Guinea pigs who have recently experienced significant stress are at heightened risk of developing clinical disease if exposed to Bordetella.

Vitamin C deficiency directly impacts a guinea pig's ability to fight infection. Since guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own vitamin C, any shortfall in their diet weakens their immune response. Guinea pigs with inadequate vitamin C intake are not only more likely to contract Bordetella if exposed but are also more likely to develop severe disease with rapid progression to pneumonia. Young guinea pigs, elderly guinea pigs, and those with pre-existing health conditions are also at elevated risk of serious illness from Bordetella.

Section 3 Symptoms

Bordetella infection in guinea pigs can progress rapidly, so recognizing symptoms at every stage is critical for getting timely treatment. Early symptoms may be subtle and easy to dismiss as minor. You might notice your guinea pig sneezing more than usual, particularly if the sneezing is accompanied by a small amount of nasal discharge. The discharge in early infection is often clear or slightly cloudy. Your guinea pig may seem slightly less energetic than normal, or you might notice a minor decrease in appetite.

As the infection takes hold, the symptoms become more apparent. Nasal discharge typically increases in volume and may become thicker, turning from clear to white, yellow, or even greenish. You may hear audible breathing sounds, including clicking, wheezing, or crackling, that indicate the infection has moved into the lower airways. Your guinea pig's eyes may become watery or develop discharge as the infection affects the tear ducts and surrounding tissues. Sneezing may become more frequent and forceful.

Reducing food intake is a significant warning sign that the infection is worsening. Guinea pigs who are having difficulty breathing often eat less because breathing and chewing simultaneously becomes uncomfortable. You may notice that your guinea pig approaches food with interest but then turns away, or eats only small amounts before stopping. Weight loss can follow quickly when eating decreases.

Advanced symptoms indicate that the infection has likely progressed to pneumonia, which is an emergency situation. Labored breathing is one of the most alarming signs, and you may see your guinea pig's sides heaving with effort, their nostrils flaring, or their head extended upward as they try to get more air. Some guinea pigs breathe with an audible rasping or gurgling sound. They may sit with a hunched posture and resist lying down because pressure on the chest makes breathing even harder.

Other emergency symptoms include a significant drop in body temperature, with cold ears and feet being noticeable signs. Complete food and water refusal, extreme lethargy, unresponsiveness, and a dull or sunken appearance to the eyes all indicate critical illness. In the most severe cases, guinea pigs may develop a bluish tinge to their lips, ears, or feet from lack of oxygen. Any guinea pig showing signs of labored breathing or respiratory distress needs emergency veterinary care immediately, as pneumonia in guinea pigs can be fatal within 24 to 48 hours without treatment.

Section 4 Diagnosis

Diagnosing Bordetella infection requires veterinary examination, and the urgency of getting your guinea pig seen cannot be overstated given how quickly respiratory infections can progress in this species. Your exotic vet will start with a thorough physical examination, paying particular attention to the respiratory system. They will listen to your guinea pig's lungs with a stethoscope, checking for abnormal sounds like crackling, wheezing, or areas of reduced breath sounds that would indicate fluid or inflammation in the lungs.

The vet will assess your guinea pig's overall condition, including their body temperature, hydration status, body weight, and general demeanor. They will examine the nose and eyes for discharge and note its character. A guinea pig who is bright, alert, and eating with mild nasal discharge is in a very different clinical situation than one who is lethargic, not eating, and struggling to breathe.

Chest X-rays are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools for respiratory infections. Radiographs can reveal whether the infection has progressed to the lungs, showing patterns of pneumonia such as areas of consolidation, fluid accumulation, or widespread inflammation. The X-ray findings help your vet determine the severity of the infection and guide treatment intensity. In some cases, X-rays may also reveal other contributing factors like heart enlargement.

Culture and sensitivity testing provides the most specific diagnostic information. Your vet may collect samples from nasal discharge or, in more serious cases, from deeper in the respiratory tract. These samples are sent to a laboratory where the bacteria are grown and identified, confirming whether Bordetella bronchiseptica is the causative organism. The sensitivity portion of the test determines which antibiotics are most effective against the specific strain of bacteria, which is invaluable for selecting the right treatment.

Blood work may be recommended, particularly in more severe cases. A complete blood count can reveal elevated white blood cell counts that confirm active infection, and a blood chemistry panel checks for organ stress that might affect treatment choices. In multi-guinea-pig households where one animal has been diagnosed with Bordetella, the vet may recommend examining all guinea pigs in the group, as others may be in the early stages of infection.

Section 5 Treatment

Treatment for Bordetella infection must begin immediately and typically involves a multi-pronged approach. Antibiotics are the primary treatment, and the choice of antibiotic is critical because not all antibiotics are safe for guinea pigs. Certain antibiotics, particularly those in the penicillin family when given orally, can cause fatal disruption of the gut bacteria. Your exotic vet will prescribe guinea pig-safe antibiotics, with common choices including trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, or chloramphenicol. The antibiotic course typically lasts two to three weeks and must be completed fully even if symptoms improve before then.

Supportive care is just as important as antibiotics, especially in moderate to severe cases. Nebulization therapy, where your guinea pig breathes in a fine mist of saline solution and sometimes medication, helps open airways, loosen mucus, and deliver medication directly to the lungs. Your vet may provide a nebulizer for home use or recommend bringing your guinea pig in for regular treatments.

Fluid therapy addresses dehydration, which is common in guinea pigs who have been eating and drinking less due to illness. Fluids may be given subcutaneously at the vet's office or in severe cases intravenously during hospitalization. Proper hydration supports immune function and helps thin respiratory secretions.

Nutritional support is essential because guinea pigs who stop eating face the dual threat of gut stasis on top of their respiratory illness. Syringe feeding with a critical care formula provides calories and fiber to keep the digestive system moving. Vitamin C supplementation is particularly important during infection, as the immune system's vitamin C demands increase when fighting illness.

Pain management and anti-inflammatory medications help reduce inflammation in the airways and make your guinea pig more comfortable. Guinea pigs who are more comfortable eat better and recover faster. In severe cases requiring hospitalization, oxygen therapy may be provided to support breathing while antibiotics take effect. Follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor recovery, repeat chest X-rays, and determine when it is safe to discontinue treatment.

Section 6 Homecare

Home care for a guinea pig being treated for Bordetella requires dedication and close attention. Administer all medications exactly as prescribed, at the correct times and in the correct amounts. If your guinea pig is difficult to medicate, ask your vet for tips on making administration easier. Some antibiotics can be mixed into a small amount of critical care formula, while others need to be given directly by syringe.

Set up your guinea pig's environment to support respiratory recovery. Keep the cage in a warm, draft-free area with good but gentle ventilation. Avoid using any dusty bedding, and consider switching to fleece liners during recovery to minimize airborne particles. Keep the cage scrupulously clean, changing bedding or washing liners more frequently than usual to reduce ammonia levels that could irritate compromised airways. Do not use air fresheners, scented candles, or strong cleaning products anywhere near your guinea pig.

If your vet has prescribed nebulization treatments at home, follow their instructions for frequency and duration. A common setup involves placing your guinea pig in a small, covered container with openings for airflow while directing the nebulizer mist inside. Sessions typically last ten to fifteen minutes and may be done two to four times daily depending on your vet's instructions.

Monitor your guinea pig carefully throughout recovery. Track their eating and drinking, weigh them daily, and listen for changes in breathing sounds. Syringe feed as directed if appetite is reduced. Keep them separate from other guinea pigs if your vet recommends isolation, though be aware that social isolation is stressful and should be balanced against the need to prevent spread. Contact your vet immediately if breathing worsens, if appetite drops further, or if your guinea pig becomes significantly more lethargic. Bordetella can relapse, and early intervention at the first sign of worsening is critical.

Section 7 Prevention

Preventing Bordetella infection is far preferable to treating it, and several key measures significantly reduce your guinea pig's risk. The most important step is avoiding contact between guinea pigs and known carriers of Bordetella. Never house guinea pigs and rabbits together, as rabbits are frequent asymptomatic carriers. If you have both guinea pigs and rabbits, house them in completely separate areas and wash your hands thoroughly between handling each species.

Be cautious about dogs as well, particularly if your dog has recently been vaccinated with the intranasal Bordetella vaccine, as the live vaccine can temporarily shed bacteria. Keep recently vaccinated dogs away from guinea pigs for at least two weeks after vaccination. In general, minimize direct contact between dogs and guinea pigs as a standard precaution.

Quarantine new guinea pigs for at least two to three weeks before introducing them to your existing guinea pigs. During quarantine, house the new guinea pig in a completely separate room and handle them after your existing guinea pigs. Watch for any signs of respiratory illness during the quarantine period. This practice catches not only Bordetella but other infections that a new guinea pig might be carrying.

Maintain excellent environmental conditions. Keep cages clean, well-ventilated, and free from ammonia buildup. Use low-dust bedding and avoid exposure to airborne irritants. Maintain stable temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and avoid placing cages in drafty areas or near heating and cooling vents that create temperature fluctuations.

Support your guinea pig's immune system through proper nutrition, particularly ensuring adequate vitamin C intake of at least 25 to 50 milligrams daily. Minimize stress through consistent routines, proper socialization, appropriate handling, and a calm living environment. Stress reduction is one of the most underappreciated aspects of disease prevention in guinea pigs.

If one guinea pig in your household is diagnosed with Bordetella, work with your vet to determine whether prophylactic treatment for your other guinea pigs is appropriate. Early treatment or prophylaxis can prevent an outbreak from spreading through your entire group.

Section 8 Prognosis

The prognosis for Bordetella in guinea pigs depends heavily on how early the infection is caught and how aggressively it is treated. Guinea pigs who receive veterinary care at the first signs of respiratory symptoms, while the infection is still in the upper airways, generally have a good prognosis. With appropriate antibiotics, supportive care, and diligent home management, many guinea pigs recover fully from early-stage Bordetella within two to four weeks.

When the infection has progressed to pneumonia, the prognosis becomes more guarded. Pneumonia in guinea pigs is serious and carries a significant mortality rate even with treatment. Guinea pigs with moderate pneumonia who receive intensive care including antibiotics, nebulization, fluids, and nutritional support have a reasonable chance of recovery, but the process is longer and more uncertain. Severe pneumonia with respiratory distress, oxygen dependency, and systemic illness has a poor prognosis, and not all guinea pigs survive despite aggressive treatment.

Age and overall health significantly affect outcomes. Young, otherwise healthy guinea pigs tend to recover more successfully than elderly guinea pigs or those with pre-existing health conditions. Guinea pigs with strong immune systems supported by proper nutrition and adequate vitamin C fare better than those who are nutritionally compromised.

Recovery from Bordetella can leave lasting effects in some guinea pigs. The damage to the respiratory lining caused by the bacteria can increase susceptibility to future respiratory infections. Some guinea pigs develop chronic low-grade respiratory issues after a serious Bordetella infection. Regular veterinary monitoring after recovery helps catch any lingering or recurring problems early.

In multi-guinea-pig households, the prognosis is also affected by how effectively spread is controlled. If all guinea pigs in the group develop symptoms simultaneously, managing multiple sick animals can be challenging and the risk of losing one or more increases. Early intervention, quarantine of symptomatic animals, and possible prophylactic treatment of exposed housemates improve outcomes for the group as a whole. The overarching message is that speed matters tremendously with Bordetella. Every day of delay between symptom onset and treatment significantly worsens the prognosis, so never adopt a wait-and-see approach with respiratory symptoms in guinea pigs.
