Complete failure of contractions leaves a mother in labor without any ability to deliver babies. If this occurs early, the babies die and are reabsorbed. If it occurs after some babies are delivered with others remaining, the remaining babies die in the uterus. The mother must be treated veterinarily to pass remaining babies or placental material or to prevent infection. Stillbirth of one or more babies can occur with complicated labor.
