If you use window treatments, ensure they're positioned to reduce drafts while maintaining light access. Heavy curtains can help block drafts when closed, though you want to open them during the day for light. Neglecting to identify heating system returns is a mistake. If your heating system pulls air through returns near the guinea pig cage, that creates significant air current and temperature instability. Understanding your heating system layout prevents this mistake.

Assuming guinea pigs will move away from drafts if they're uncomfortable is incorrect. Guinea pigs may not move away from a draft even if it's causing them discomfort and stress. They sometimes seem to tolerate conditions that are actually harmful. Prevention through proper placement is better than assuming guinea pigs will self-protect.

Some owners think that enclosing a cage completely prevents drafts. Complete enclosure is problematic because it traps ammonia and stale air. You want draft avoidance paired with good ventilation, not draft avoidance through complete sealing.

In very cold climates where home heating runs extensively, draft problems can be severe. These homes might benefit from guinea pig cages in interior bathrooms or interior closets where draft exposure is minimized.
