Vitamin C supplementation is the second critical pillar of prevention. Since guinea pigs cannot synthesize their own vitamin C, they need a reliable daily source. Fresh vegetables high in vitamin C, such as bell peppers and leafy greens, should be offered daily. Many owners also provide a liquid vitamin C supplement to ensure their guinea pig meets the recommended daily intake of roughly twenty-five to thirty milligrams. Avoid relying on vitamin C drops added to the water bottle, as the vitamin degrades rapidly in water and you cannot control how much your guinea pig actually consumes.

Regular dental checks should be part of your guinea pig's routine care. At home, you can monitor the front incisors for proper alignment and length. The top and bottom incisors should meet evenly, and the top incisors should be slightly shorter than the bottom ones. Factors that improve the prognosis include early detection before the infection reaches the bone, a guinea pig that continues eating throughout treatment or accepts syringe feeding readily, treatment by a vet experienced specifically with guinea pig dental disease, and a dedicated owner who can commit to the often lengthy home care regimen. Factors that worsen the prognosis include delayed treatment, infection involving multiple teeth or significant bone destruction, a guinea pig that is already debilitated or has other concurrent health issues, and the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The financial commitment for treating a dental abscess can be substantial, potentially ranging from several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the number of procedures needed.
