As the due date approaches, monitoring the dam's rectal temperature twice daily provides a reliable indicator of impending labor. Normal canine temperature ranges from 100 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. A drop below 99 degrees typically signals that whelping will begin within 24 hours. The dam may also exhibit nesting behavior, restlessness, panting, shivering, or loss of appetite as labor approaches. These signs indicate that the breeder should remain close and prepared for the delivery to begin.

Postpartum Care

The hours and days immediately following whelping are a critical period that requires attentive monitoring of both the dam and her newborn puppies. After the final puppy is delivered and the last placenta has been passed, the dam should be allowed to rest with her litter in a clean whelping box with fresh bedding. Offering her small amounts of water and a light, easily digestible meal helps begin the recovery process. High-quality puppy food fed in multiple meals throughout the day provides the energy density needed to support milk production without overtaxing the digestive system. Fresh water should be available at all times, as milk production significantly increases the dam's fluid requirements. Monitoring the dam's weight and body condition throughout the nursing period ensures she maintains adequate reserves without becoming depleted.

The dam's emotional state during the postpartum period also warrants attention. Most Corgi mothers are attentive and nurturing, but some first-time dams may be anxious, overly restless, or unsure of their role. Providing a calm environment, limiting visitors, and allowing the dam to bond with her puppies without excessive interference supports the development of healthy maternal behavior. If the dam shows signs of rejecting her puppies, aggressive behavior toward them, or complete disinterest in nursing, veterinary consultation is urgent, as these behaviors can signal pain, illness, or hormonal imbalance.

It encompasses a commitment to the breed's long-term welfare, transparent practices, and accountability that distinguishes ethical breeders from those who breed primarily for profit or without adequate knowledge and preparation. The popularity of the Corgi breed in recent years has unfortunately attracted a significant number of irresponsible breeders who cut corners on health testing, breed dogs too frequently, and prioritize aesthetics or trends over the comprehensive health and temperament standards the breed requires.

A responsible breeder screens every potential breeding dog through the full panel of recommended health tests and only breeds dogs that have passed these evaluations. The breeding plan considers the pedigrees of both sire and dam to minimize the concentration of genetic risk factors and to produce puppies that meet the breed standard in structure, temperament, and health. Linebreeding and inbreeding coefficients are calculated and kept within conservative limits. The goal is not simply to produce puppies that look like Corgis but to produce Corgis that will live long, healthy, comfortable lives.
